New Scott E sub speed

After doing a few thousand miles on my homemade ebike (old giant and elifebike hub kit) I've been unable to resist the temptation of a "proper" pedelec. Just bought a lovely bright green scott E-SUB with steps system from Cycle Street York. Cycled it home in the blazing sunshine to Elloughton (East Yorkshire). Covered 36 miles after getting a little lost while I got used to Cyclestreets navigation app (no connection to the shop despite the name). I used a mixture of different power modes but quite a lot on full power after a stop half way for some Liquid refreshment! Very happy so far. Range seems excellent. See pic of range estimate left after I got home.

Range should be good in your area which is as flat as anywhere in the UK.

Very true. Although I seem to have the only big "hill" in the area to cycle over on my commute to work which was my original reason for getting an ebike. For what it's worth there was a fairly consistent 8-10mph headwind on yesterday's cycle so I'm still fairly impressed with the range.

You swine! I've been drooling over that bike for ages but in the end went for the Scott e-Sub Tour because it was £400 cheaper (your bike is the e-sub SPEED by the way, the e-sub SPORT is a Bosch bike).

I plan to write a review when I've run it a bit longer, but I'm very impressed with the Steps system on a derailleur bike. Yours has the Alfine di2 electronic shifting which the gadget lover in me really fancied; have you looked into whether it can be upgraded to the fully-automatic version?

Bearing in mind I only paid £1600 for mine, it's a bit of a bargain for such a good quality bike and I hope the Steps system is as reliable as it is good to use!

Yes you're right, must get the name correct By the way, cycle Street York are selling them for just over £1900 at the moment. As for upgrade, I've been told that fully automatic shifting will be available on next firmware update as long as I also upgrade the lcd control screen. They reckoned that would cost £60. The firmware update obviously is free.

If it's limited to 15.5mph then does it not contribute above that speed? I can easily ride above that speed and am concerned that it will be no use above that speed. Am I missing something? can someone explain to me like i'm five how the process works?

The bike cuts all assistance at 16ish mph (tiny bit of leeway I guess). After that you are effectively riding a slightly heavier version of the non electric sub sport model that Scott also sell. In practice this means that your average speeds for any journey will be close to 15 mph(maybe slightly higher). It's the average speed for the journey that's important. I used to commute occasionally on a normal hybrid and as you say my top speed was often around 25 mph but my average was usually a very sweaty 13.

You have the option of being less than legal however and fitting a little clip on dongle thingy from someone like badass ebikes which I believe overrides the cut out and will provide electrical assistance up to well over 20mph. Not sure how much that will shorten the possible range

The assist on all legal Bosch bikes stops at 15.5mph.

There is no extra resistance from the crank drive motor, but above that speed you will be pedalling a 20kg+ bike on your own.

Could a derestricted shimano steps bike make it 31miles at an 18mph average?

I reckon my dongled Bosch bike - similar size battery/similar motor system - would just about do it, so you have a good chance with a Steps bike.

As said, you would need to use one of the lower assistance levels, or charge both ends.

Yep, there was a 20% discount applied to Scott ebikes at most suppliers last week (I got mine from Tredz) - list price of the Tour was previously £1999.

I find that the range indication is very erratic at the moment because I spend so much time riding above assist speed - maybe it will settle down as I put more miles on.

As far as I know the exact same steps system is sold in America and is set for their top speed of 20mph so absolutely no worries there. If only the official UK dealer would agree to poke about in the official shimano firmware and set maximum to 20mph. That would be perfect, or maybe import a USA spec model. The raleigh misceo in USA looks excellent.

i doubt any uk dealer will do it as it will make them liable if you hit some one ect.

I think they all use the Shimano E-Tube application to update the firmware. It looks like it just runs off a normal PC as long as you have the connecting device for the Bike Data cable. It also look like you can customise settings within the program. You can google it and have a quick look at the instruction manual.
