mine slides over the rear speed sensor so can be removed in seconds and bike reset to default others are wired dir in to the motor so you cant even see them bar a small head phone jack to turn it on and off.

some also now use phone apps so show the right speed when fitted but still wired in to the motor.

Ah thanks for explaining! Look a bit like the over-priced Speedict's that appeared on the market from China around 2010... they were kind of a little Bluetooth widget that sat between the controller and your Android phone and gave you a lot of control over your controller...ability to adjust the speed range of the throttle, and see the speed on your phone etc.. I actually have one of those Speedicts in my bits box somewhere never got around to installing it!! These dongles look interesting.

also over a certain speed the motor will pull max power from the battery so half its range and its life.

so yes you will go faster but at the cost of range and battery life.

a dongle will do no good at all going up or down hill as you just run out of gears DH.

this used half the batt in less than 20mins.

the leading uk ebike suppler fits dongles and honers the 2 year warranty and sells sclass bikes to anybody.
This has been said before. On another post today juicy bikes said the meninblack have just paid them a visit to make sure they weren't selling bikes with full speed throttles. You would think juicy bikes would be the meninblack's last port of call.

Since you have the numbers to hand, I'm curious to know:

1) How many members of the 12.500 registered would you estimate own and ride an illegal pedelec?
Impossible to be accurate about this, but almost all bought their bikes though the usual routes from bike shops of direct from the major suppliers. It follows that the great majority are legal

2) Of the 150,000 active e-bikes, you say "most" are legal. What % are not legal?
Same answer as (1) above, As Frank at Powabyke often reminded members, this forum is not representative of the e-biking world, as one of the largest suppliers of only legal e-bikes for around a decade, he knows the market.

3) Comparing the market now, to how it was in 2007, how would you say it's changed in terms in sales and brands, particularly over the last 1-2 years?
The biggest change has been how much greater the European e-bikes have become as a proportion of UK sales. In the early forum years they were virtually non-existent, now they are a major proportion. The key thing in this is that they are almost all entirely legal pedelecs without throttles, thus driving legality

4) Is it fair to say, high-powered e-bikes are now much much easier to get hold of, and much cheaper, than in 2006-2007? One only has to look at eBay and you can see many sellers of 1000W kits and bikes operating freely in the UK, and these are grey imports from China. A few years ago, that was not something we saw.
Not so, it's the opposite. These high powered motors featured even more in the early years, Crystalyte motors in particular were very popular and there were several makes which have disappeared since. Not only that, many of the suppliers of the high powered kits have dropped out, for example a major supplier of them, Team Hybrid, have abandoned e-bikes altogether.

Years ago we had a whole weekend national e-bike rally at Presteigne, and as part of that we had an e-bike race on public roads with almost all the bikes competing hopelessly illegal. Some were twin motored with 1000 watts in each wheel! The organisers illegally closed the public roads for the racing and hill climbing events.

That completely illegal activity with thousands of visitors went on two years running with nothing done about it, and the residents of Presteigne loved the event. Realising it was pushing luck, the event in the third year was confined to legal use areas and that was the last time it was held. The main organiser is now a director of a leading e-bike company supplying legal e-bikes.

As you can see, there is no big trend to illegality, if there's any trend it's the opposite, hence my lack of concern.

The tone of the site has changed over the last year, is much less polite.
Speaking personally, I don't care much for the general tone and politics of the forum these days, as a consequence I spend very little time on it compared to a few years ago.
When I was a non trade member the forum used to be fun place to spend some time and I learned a lot from the handful of really knowledgeable members that I have a lot of respect for.
There used to be a lot more good hearted banter than there is today.
Commercially I find very little benefit from being a trade member.
I am always happy to offer help or advice that relates to the brands that we deal with, but that can be done at a personal level by email or phone call.

As ever Flecc knows more about the subject than anyone else on the forum and expresses himself in a reasoned fashion.

Commercially I find very little benefit from being a trade member.
I'd hate to see trade members vanish from the forum, and unlike some on here, I value comment by trade members when questions are being asked about bike suitability etc.
It does bother me though when I read posts from say JuicyBike*, and the opening line is almost an apology for offering an opinion, with a feeling seemingly, that they are waiting for a barrage of abuse for doing so.

To me trade members engaging in threads should be valued. I guess the problem comes when someone, perhaps another trade member, feels that they are having their toes firmly stamped on.
Abuse from forum members for sharing that opinion, isn't great either.

The day that trade members vanish, is the day that the forum ends.

So the question is, what could change or be change to encourage all trade members to stay?

*For some reason that one stands out in my memory, and perhaps I had read the opening comment incorrectly.

if thats all the site can rely on to be funded then they dont know what they are doing tbh.

just makes the site look like its controlled by them and not the site owners.

not that there are any mods to control anything anyway lol.

I wasn't talking about the financial funding of the site.

I was talking about the value of knowledge that trade members bring. :)

As for mods. I think that you will find that they feel less is more, and again, don't see how any of us can judge them for it. :)

Well Eddie, I do agree with what you say. Clearly I must have upset you at some point. Will a second line apology do - apologies for that.
Being a trade member sometimes casts me in a light I would sooner not have, when I join in a discussion or make a point.

The trade members do seem prolific on this forum, because it has so few actively posting non trade members.
I feel that trade members are here first and foremost for their business interests, thats why they pay to be on here. They are just salesmen to me and i dont trust much of what salesmen say.

No it wasn't me. :)

I'll try and find the thread, but it wasn't one that you received any flak for commenting on. :)

The loss of D8veh and Flecc would be a massive blow to the membership.
All the knowledge and free support they offer. Perhaps RScott should offer them a cut of the revenue?

First thing I,d do is ban silly feckers, then I,d pay folk to script stuff...whatever that means..
I,d draw a list of rules up...and reinstate capital punishment for transgressors...

It would be well worth it at that price..

I,d also try and get posters to use capital letters and punctuation but that might be a step too far.
I,d also try and stop folk starting sentences with "and" ,which is grammatically wrong.
I would ban text speech too.

I would refuse any financial reward and suspect Dave would as well. Impartiality and integrity is far too valuable to be compromised by a cash reward.

Personally I greatly value the trade members. They often help members who are experiencing problems, sometimes without any charge for parts and sometimes even helping with rival bikes when they can. In general they support each other as well as members and for the most part show more goodwill and courtesy than some of the private members in here.

Did I read right that you are a teacher...if that is the case no wonder our kids are becoming extreme and radicalised ,if this is the role model we are exerting them to....I do hope you are joking but I am not so sure.
