I've been wanting to try recumbency in a lazy three wheeled way for a while, and kept my eyes open until something that had enough of my wishlist features turned up within a seven day ride's radius of home.

I didn't dare mention it until I'd broken the back of the journey, but four days in and 200 miles closer to home than I started, although rather more than 200 ridden when cycle routes are taken into account, I have three days and 120 miles to go, so beginning to feel I'll make it.

The machine is a 2015 HP Velotechnik Scorpion fs20, originally supplied as an electric rear hub version, but now with a Hope Pro 4 distinctly not electric hub!

I am at least the third owner, but it could have rolled out of the factory yesterday, utterly pristine bar a few tiny scrapes on the outside edges of the front mudguards and hubs.

It is a folder, but not a shoe in for train carriage, so riding home unassisted is my first recumbent experience, and my first unassisted riding for over 10,000 miles!

First impressions are that unassisted I am the slowest thing on the roads by far. I'm carrying 'minimal' bike packing gear, but still about 15kg, and the trike with streamer screen, rack and mudguards will be a touch under 20, so it is only the tourers that pass that badly show me up! Bring on the assistance!

I may try out three versions: my much delayed TSDZ2, my spare Shimano e5000, and of course a rear hub motor too.

I wanted full suspension, mudguards, the Streamer screen, the moulded seat and a 26" rear wheel. The only one missing is the big wheel, which I'll learn to manage without.

Handy label.

First camp at Masham after a hard day following Sustrans routes to avoid main roads on my first day.

On a big climb out of Reeth

Tea at the Tan Hill Inn. Not a climb I will repeat without assistance!

Camp 2, just short of Appleby in Westmoreland.

Familiar ground 1: the best pasties and cheese.

Familiar ground 2: it is always sunny in Cavendish Gardens!

Early morning shopping, day 4, Lockerbie. No camp 3 pics, phone too low.

Have I changed my mind? No, just having breakfast next door!

And camp 4.

The kindness of strangers!

There I was, camping on a wide grassy verge beside the cycle path just before the really urban Glasgow, when my tent was lit up by headlamps that lingered. Was this to be my first ' now then, what's going on 'ere?' moment?

No! It was a kind man who had seen me cycling earlier and thought I needed a curry and a can of a local brew to wash it down. Now that doesn't happen every day!

Thank you, kind sir!

Sadly the kind deed would of been part wasted on me , I hate curry. Though the rice and crisps would have been very acceptable.

Nice HP, Matthew. I think bent trikes are always crying out to have a mid motor .

Yes exactly crisps they crunch just like them but taste 100% of oil.

Nearly home, 300 miles done in 6 days, just 18 for tomorrow.

A taste of speed today on several miles of flat and gently down, good surface, no wind. Holding top gear at my normal 70 ish cadence, about 20 mph. Downhill somewhat faster, must get a speedo.

A motor will sort out the uphill effort, what I don't yet know is whether that saves enough leg power for the flat to allow me to cruise above 25km/h for much of the time. Average speed and long, long days are my aim. We'll see!

Learnings so far...

My slightly dodgy back loves this seat! Shape suits me. Bum is fine too, a bit sore after the Tan Hill Inn climb, but that seems to be the effort demanded of the muscles, not saddle soreness.

Steering is superb, very precise, stable, not twitchy. Suspension good enough, needs stiffening at the rear with more preload, elastomer OK at the front.

Brakes need a good clean and new pads before I pass judgement. Hydraulic discs on each front wheel with 160mm rotors, not as powerful as expected. Parking V brake on rear is good.

Although low, does not feel as exposed as I expected in traffic, partly most drivers give more room than a normal bike, and partly I have a better frame of reference as I have the front wheel always in my view. Still the odd few as always!

Leaving last night's camp at Loch Lomond.

IMG_20230502_090006669_HDR.jpg

The cycle path has been comprehensively cleaned along Loch Lomond side, from Balloch to Tarbet. Very welcome. I still got stuck on a short steep bit, changed down too far too fast and foot shoe pedal.

Another fine lunch at the Real Food Cafe, Tyndrum. No ebike batteries to charge this time, just my phone.

Looking across part of Loch Awe, in Loch Awe village.

Last camp on the edge of Loch Awe on a very large empty layby.

a bit sore after the Tan Hill Inn climb
You did that without electrical assistance, therefore a 250W hub drive would be sufficient? (If this is the Tan Hill Inn you refer to, which it can't be, because this one is in the Lake District, but it's the only Tan Hill Inn I could find)

Yorkshire Dales, just north of Keld. There is no easy way across the Pennines that isn't a main road, so I thought I might as well visit England's highest pub. Failed to get snowed in. Timing, as usual!

Unsecured on this journey, except tied to a tent guy line at night!

All my camps are fairly quiet by the standards of most of England, even before and after Glasgow on the roadsides.

I tend to engage with anyone passing by, and take their advice, like hide the trike behind the tent and take the flag down, but no hassle this trip.

Lots of people finding it interesting and me perhaps eccentric, so maybe that helps too!

@matthewslack - He's installed two front facing cameras, so he can drive it with the lid closed.

I have made some progress with my spare Shimano motor, which is now mounted to a new boom using short pieces of standard aluminium rectangular box sections matching the boom diameter and some chunky 5mm 6082T6 side plates.

Successfully test ridden 50 metres, enough to feel the motor kick in, and now awaiting longer cables for the speed sensor and display.

Challenges remain, including how to fit a trailer hitch when the pannier rack covers the 20" wheel's axle ends and there is suspension!

In the end I have run out of time as today is day 1 of 21 days off, and the weather is perfect for solar biking up here for the next 12 days or so if the forecast is to be believed.

I have another leave at the end of August so I should be able to have it ready by then.
