My original battery has 'smart' bms, the replacement does not, I knew that before I purchased the replacement. As I said the only difference is that the percent value battery remaining is not displayed on the display
Thank you for clarifying. As you can tell I don't know jack about electronics.

Yes my uncle checked the charger and said was working fine
As I mentioned some batteries do have an internal charge fuse, I don't know if this is the case for the crossfire battery.
Batteries don;t usually just die, the cells will hold voltage but to find out where the issue may lie it would need to be opened and tested internally.

I took off the sensor and gave it a dry clean and screwed it back on. When I switched on the LCD I got the same error 21 right away. I took the sensor off again and cleaned it a little more and placed it back on. When I switched on the LCD I was surprised not to see the error 21 again. The display shown the battery bars, so I thought I'd give it a ride. Unfortunately pedal assistance is not kicking in at all. I'll give it another go tonight.

The sensor may still be dirty look to see if there are any metal contacts or magnets visible, a cooton but and isoproponol is good for cleaning. In the link I posted one guy has issue with magnets in the crank which solved his e21 problem.

Thank you, I'll keep trying. If I can't get it to work I may take it to Halfords and get them to have a look.

Update after few days:

I cleaned out the torque sensor multiple times and the error kept showing up. I gave up trying to fix it myself and booked it in for an inspection. Today I decided to go for a small ride. Something inside of me thought about switching on the LCD display, and suddenly the pedal assistance kicked in. I was so surprised! I still plan taking it for to the store to have everything checked, and hopefully the sensor will continue working just fine.

Big thanks to Nealh and egroover for all the help and advice :)

Sadly so many have had issues with the suntour carrera bike sand it isn't just on this forum, thye aren't imv worth the hassle. Pleased though that yours is working currently but one shouldn't have to worry about whether it will or will not work everytime.

Hi, though you guys might like an up date on my second hand cross fire. I have now learnt how to solder. And have put on a e-bay battery, it is less than half the price of the Halfords unit; and it is bigger. And it has an on and off switch. As you might have gathered, crossfires suffer from parasitic discharge. I have included some photos. If it works well on the road, I will attach the battery properly. As a side note - my cross fire has stopped cutting out! Was it the battery all along, causing the problems? Oh; I should also mention, the e-bay battery comes with a proper charger. With a proper plug. :)

One suspects the cutting out is due to a sensitive BMS or heat sensor in the battery.

Good luck with the new battery and hope it works well for you.

Can't see a heat sensor in the Halfords battery. Also there is very little in the way of metalwork, in the Halfords electronics, to help get rid of the heat build-up. I am testing the new battery tomorrow on the steepest hill in town:)

I cut off the alloy bars under the old battery mounts, and put in a couple of these studs, from my local car accessory shop. The studs will hold the Chinese battery :)
Pictures of the competed project coming soon.

Thought you might like to see finished project.
It is heavier than the he original battery, but it has greater capacity, It is a 540Wh. I like the fact it has an 'off' switch. Crossfires don't have cutoffs on the brake levers.
It is perkier than the previous battery, I am not using full power as much. And the charger has a much better, heavier connector plug. Lastly, it was half the price of the Halfords replacement battery, the charger was included as well!!! Amazing!

That looks really good to be honest!

So the motor which was fitted onto the back of wheel is finally end of life.

Could somebody please suggest a replacement wheel with a motor that can fit my bicycle? I'm not looking for anything fancy, just want to keep it the same if possible. The bike is the infamous Carrera Crossfire E-bike this original thread was based upon. The wheel size is 700cc. I have the right cassette and brake disc to match the wheel.

If it's too much of a hassle I'll probably just buy a non electric bike and save up good money for a decent e-bike down the road. Thank you for all suggestions and help.

The Suntour motor has a special way of resisting torque. I'm not sure that you can fit a standard Chinese one. Show us a picture of your drop-outs to confirm.

I hope that helps. I can take more photos if you like

They look OK. Can you confirm that they're 10mm wide?

If they are, it should be pretty straight forward to fit whatever motor you want. I would fit a torque arm on the brake side for security.

If you have 8 or 9-speed gears, it should be a cassette motor, not a freewheel one.

The connector will have to be changed too. The one you have is not very good, so I'd cut it off the controller side, buy a motor extension cable and cut the female off, leaving about 6" of wire to solder to your remaining cable. Before soldering, twist all the wires together and separate them with bits of folded card or unshrunk heat-shrink, then test because you might need a connection sequence that is not colour to colour.
