What is the latest thinking on new battery running flat conditioning cycles, some say yes and others say absolutely not needed.I am not talking about setting the bms on an older battery just when it is brand new.

Is it a NiCd? Lithium batteries don't need conditioning.

My new Kalkhoff manual said to run the battery totally flat for the first 3 times then once every six months - so I did.

My wife wondered why on earth I was doing laps of the village after riding home from work.

That's probably just an unthoughtful reprint from the old Kalkhoff Panasonic bikes that had some sort of special battery gauge in the battery before we had all the computer wizardry in modern bikes, though it's still possible that they need the actual battery capacity to calculate predicted range; however, I would have thought it would be much easier and more accurate to use the battery maker's watt-hours rating, so the more I think about it, the more it seems just plain daft.

oh well - I got a bit of extra exercise anyway.

I did not that once the batteries had been run flat they required the charger to be turned off an on again a couple of times to kick off the charging process.

I had the panasonic motor and it said in the manual that the battery should be run completely flat 2 to 3 times to fully condition the lithium battery,i always thought that it was still standard practice.

From Battery University:

Li-ion is a low-maintenance battery, an advantage that most other chemistries cannot claim. The battery has no memory and does not need exercising (deliberate full discharge) to keep it in good shape. Self-discharge is less than half that of nickel-based systems and this helps the fuel gauge applications. The nominal cell voltage of 3.60V can directly power mobile phones, tablets and digital cameras, offering simplifications and cost reductions over multi-cell designs. The drawbacks are the need for protection circuits to prevent abuse, as well as high price.
