Need your opinion on ebikes/pedelecs

Now that it arises, I often wonder why most electric bikes seem to be so much more expensive than buying a regular bicycle and fitting a kit. Am I missing something?

I guess smaller volumes make manufacturing more expensive, it may also be because kits tend to have smaller batteries.
