David,

You are a very nice fella! :)

Indeed he is. I am curious to see what a kalkhoff copy is too.

I like the look of the new whoosh scirocco cd which surprises me as I always went for mountain bikes. Maybe I am growing up now I am 42! I am just curious about the type and spec of the crank motor in it.

Just remember to take your own sweet time, because at the end of the day the final decision is yours.
This may sound so obvious to you,but you get what you pay for if you plan to buy cheap, ask people on here before parting with your cash.

On the other hand try not to be too mean to yourself -TREAT YOURSELF ONCE IN A WHILE AND ENJOY!

I feel a self build is right for me due to being a Yorkshire man when it comes to money. I do not feel I could spend 2k plus on a bicycle ever being a motorcycle lover also I would be too tempted to get a real bike lol. Though that's not gonna get me fit is it. And a little aided exercise is better than none.

Agree with RobF.

If you want a high-powered kit for a 700C then something like this (201rpm) :

Bafang BPM 36V500W Rear Driving Bike Conversion Kit - BMSBATTERY

with this

36V 13Ah Li-Ion Shrink Tube EBike Battery Pack - BMSBATTERY
These seem to be around £250 delivered plus duty if stopped etc. what would I need extra? I am guessing a rear battery rack and alu battery case. My bike is ok and suits me so a little tlc and this kit should be good. I have read about these motors and different codes. Is the one linked good for climbing or speed? And on a good climbing one what will its top speed be?

I am no expert with bikes so any help is good especially with best gears to use since my bike really needs an upgrade anyhow. It could do with getting disc brakes too, can they be fitted to any bike?

You are very unlikely to get away with vat & duty on a consignment containing a battery: Best to dfinitely factor that in to your budget.

Oh, and Bms only ship batteries by Dhl, to the best of my knowledge:

I recently got one & prepaid for a cheaper courier(not the very cheapest, though) & they shipped by Dhl without charging extra: It seems to be q bit of a lottery how much they charge.

Fair point, not an issue really though. Shame there are no uk suppliers of the same kit. I have bought loads of stuff from china and never paid duty but never ordered a battery.

Hi Waj,

If they were available from a UK supplier, that supplier would have to pay the import duty and VAT like we do then pass it on to the buyer.

To repeat what Jack wrote, there is very little chance of avoiding duty and VAT these days on e-bike kits with batteries.

I don't mind paying vat and duty, par for the course really. If ku sellers had them I agree they have to add everything and make a profit. Still sometimes many people just prefer to pay that premium to get from the uk. Though I am sure there is not enough demand for a UK supplier to bother with them.

On another note if I were to get a ready made bike can it easily be updated with a better motor or would it also need a new controller and battery?

This the bike I am thinking of converting. It does need a new bottom bracket and new brakes and a new chain and tyres since its done 3467 miles according to my cycle computer which I am amazed the batteries still work. I will need to fit the battery rack on the rear as I want to fit panniers too. The tyres will probably be more road type too. Not sure what size wheels they are but assume they are 700c.

Upgrading to discs unlikely to be cost effective when a complete new bike can be had for about £400.

You would need disc-specific forks for the front, and the rear might need some modification to take a disc.

I reckon it's more trouble than it's worth.

Others can advise on the kits, but you might need a disc specific one if you are buying a motor already built into a wheel.

To be honest I have never had any issue with the current brakes. It only needs new blocks and the cables oiling/adjusting. They have always stopped me ok.
