Hi all.I have just recently acquired a fairly old NANO electric motor installed in a 20" front wheel.I would like to test out the motor before installing it on a bicycle.I just have the motor nothing else.It has the usual power lead coming out of the motor with a three pin plug.My question is how do I tell which is positve/negative etc.I do'nt want to connect without knowing in case I blow an internal fuse or damage the motor.any help would be appreciated..

You won't be able to run it to test it without a controller. That's because these motors only have the three phase windings and no way of distributing current to them to drive them in a sequence. In that respect they are incomplete and not yet motors, only becoming motors when partnered with a controller.

The controller does roughly what the commutator and brushes of an old DC motor used to do, only better.

All you can do at present is use a meter to check the continuity between any of the three wires. I take it you have the motor with only the three phase wires. If you also have a second wire coming out with five thin Hall sensor wires, it is possible to do tests on their status.

Thanks guess I need to sort out a controller
Yes, you need a sensorless one if it's only a three wire motor. Most controllers are the 8 wire type, 3 phase connections and 5 Hall sensor connectors.

Where in the country are you ?
Might be possible to call in to one of many specialists dotted around the UK, generally all very helpful folk.
