My first crash - Gear problem

Had my first off today on the ebike (Cube Reaction Race 500). Ive only had the bike a couple of weeks so it really pissed me off.

I had to suddenly hop up a high kerb due to a truck squeeing me off the road. I didn't have time to slow down enough to hop my front wheel up the kerb, resulting in me going 'arse over tit' over the handlebars.

Bike took a scuff to the Purion display, but the gears aren working correctly. When I change gear it doesn't change immediately, but a few seconds later it will then suddenly change. The 'down' gear lever isn't returning either, Im having to pull it back with my finger.

Im wondering to if the derailleur is misaligned?

Sorry to hear Bear, but welcome to the 'Had an off' club.

Mine's still got some battle damage and my shoulder's still waking me up of a night. I was similarly royally pissed off

Hope the shifting issue gets sorted easily. Mine was much better after sanding the rough bits off my brake levers and shifters, new grips, straightened front wheel and a full service get everything re-aligned as it should be.

SW, I'll give that video a watch, thanks.

Typical, I've been riding bikes for years without any offs. Then I buy a £2.5k bike and crash it almost straight away!!

Another good video here..

Hey The Bear,

Glad to hear you're ok - and sorry to hear about the battle scars on your new bike.

With the issue on the shifter, I'd recommend looking further into that is more than likely going to be the issue. A sticky shifter will cause a lag in changing gear.

The other thing to look at would be your derailleur hanger. These are commonly bent in crashes and do all sorts of funny things to your shifting.

Since the bike is new - even if you fix the issue for the time being - mention what has happened during your first 6 week service to get everything double checked.

More likely that the cable is damaged than the shifter or derailleur. Look at the point where the cable comes out of the derailleur.

Thanks everyone. I'l have a good look at the bike when Ive got a spare hour. But is is due to go back to the shop for a 4 week service so I might just let them sort it, though I do like to have a go at things myself.

My first "off" was couple of weeks back on slippy leaves. Scuffed frame, grazed arm and leg plus wounded pride.

That sounds like a cable nipped or damaged as Dv8eh suggested.
Sounds as if you got off lightly really,at least you got away from the lorry!

And I think I need to buy a better helmet. I don’t like the normal helmets as they seem offer little protection to the side and back of your head. I’d like one that’s more like a skateboarders helmet with more protection.

The bell full face might be bit much for commuting but most of new MTB helmets have better coverage around back and sides.

I got a snowboard helmet from Aldi 2 years ago and it covers a lot more than a bije helmet.
Best thing is it keeps your ears warm.
