I've just converted My 2015 unused (showroom condition) Carrera Vulcan MTB with hydraulic disc brakes to a pedelec (ebike) using Electric bike conversion Ltd in Datchworth Hertfordshire. What a fantastic company to deal with.The kit is a 48v 1000watt 13ah Samsung battery rear hub motor. These guys have a telephone number!! Not only is that very important, even a deal breaker in My case, they actually answer the said device to boot! Always! Along with their interactive chat feature and of course email, they have all bases covered. I didn't fancy fitting it Myself. I know what a wuss! So a good friend of mine who works in My local Motabitz agreed to fit it for Me. He needed to call them during conversion to ask a question, he said they were fabulous and very helpful saying anything you need we'll get out to you today! Which I know to be true because I did just that with them when I asked for a spare controller bag on Friday afternoon at 15.30 I received it free of charge at 9.30am the next morning (Saturday) In fact he was so impressed with them that Motabitz are now exploring the possibility of using EBC to supply kits to them in the future. And of course it goes without saying that the guys at Motabitz who tested the kit conversion were very impressed with the performance, and indeed the whole package. If You're looking for a company you can talk to and trust. I would highly recommend EBC in Datchworth.

The post was about recommending a Conversion kit company that people who are a tad unsure of just blindly buying one off the net. Has I was! But has for the conversion process, what would you like to know?

Looks good, but just to be sure, can you confirm that the motor cable exits downwards, and whether there's a torque arm on the brake side?

The motor cable does exit downwards, but the torque arm is on the cassett side! Is this an issue?

I bought the 250w rear kit from ebc with 13.4ah a while ago and fitted it to specialised sirrus elite flat bar road bike.

in mode 2 range was about 40miles on the flat.
the problem I had is spokes kept braking every 20 miles or so.
ebc were very good and twice picked up bike and replaced wheel and spokes
but I still had a problem in the end removed wheel.

I have met 2 others with ebc 500w one using kit, one ready assembled bike
and they have had no problems.

using the ebc battery on my carrerra subway one tdz2 mid moter 250w 16amps sport mode range is about 23.

I did find ebc very helpful and good to deal with, but I could never find exactly who manufactured there batteries dolphin type.

ps I do not cycle over the 15mph cut off so your range may well be far different.

just noticed yours is 48v mine was 36v

Yes early days but the kit is very responsive even quick! I really put it though its paces last week and weekend trying to almost totally discharge the battery a couple of times to condition it - I read somewhere. Basically did about 40% throttle only, 30% in level 5 assistance, and the rest in level 1&2 . I got 25miles out of it with one battery bar remaining under these conditions mostly flat with just a couple of reasonable climbs and a strong wind. Glad to hear you found EBC a good company to deal with. It's so worrying when you're looking on the net for a good kit at a fair price from a trustworthy company. Cheers man

Well, the torque arm isn't particularly well done, though it's probably adequate.

Here's why I have reservations: Firstly, the torque will pull the arm down in the direction of the seat-stay, which is the worse direction for a jubilee clip clamp. The arm can slip through. Secondly, I've know several jubilee clips on torque arms snap for no apparent reason. maybe the sharp edge weakens it. I prefer to anchor the torque arm with a proper fixing, like you get on the disk side. The tie-bar can be fixed to the lower caliper mount screw.

Bare in mind that the torque at the axle is exceptionally high. The friction of the axle nuts is surprisingly high, but if not tight enough, it takes something really strong to resist the torque.

That's the best shot I have of it. Feels robust but will have close look at it tomorrow with a view to securing it to the brake side.

Maybe a second jubilee clip would be sufficient. The one in the photo looks a bit thin, but it's not easy to see. There's different quality jubilee clips too. some are thin and weak. Others are much more substantial.

If that bit of your frame is flat, drill and tap it so that you can put a screw through the hole and fix it properly.
