Hello, I'd like to add that we're aiming to build a controller that allows the user to programme more than just a few parameters. Essentially we'd like users to be able to write programmes to process inputs from sensors (crankshaft torque sensors etc.) and download logged data. In terms of design quality and components used we will ensure that is not working like as an electric heater. Any comments welcome. Thanks for you help.

I think you are deluding yourself to think of Chinese controllers as 'electric heaters' - they have hell a lot more electronic engineers and machine code level programmers than we do. Don't try to re-invent the wheel. Just ask the likes of Lishui to supply you one with communication port and stick to selling them.
By the way, you can download data from the LCD.
