Motor buying advice

Hi. Im helping someone to build an ebike as a sort of project as he is recovering from a stroke.
He has an old ebike but has stripped it as it wasnt working and he wanted to build one to his specifications.

Everything is a bit confusing for him and although I have a background in electronics, I know nothing about ebikes.

He is at the stage where he has bought and assembled most of the parts he needs but he has bought a controller for a 3 phase motor with hall effect switches but the motor he already has does not have hall effect connections.

Ive been looking for a 36V 1000w rear wheel for him, but all I can find are kits.!

What am I missing? Is there a marketplace where I can buy components for ebikes without having to buy a complete kit?

Has he already got a 1000w motor wheel? They're not very good and probably unsuitable for what he wants. Some controllers are dual mode. They can work with or without hall sensors. If you can show pictures of what you have, it'll help a lot.

The motor he already has is front wheel and only smaller size (250w?), so he would prefer a rear wheel motor and larger power if possible.

I will find out the type of controller but I do not think it is dual mode, but we have no good instructions for it.

The geared 250w motors are much better than the ungeared 1000w ones for almost all purposes. They can still generate around 400w-750w peak, and are fairly efficient in most running conditions. The 1000w ones are only efficient running fast on the level. They need really hefty battery to provide much power and they eat through its range very fast as most of the energy goes as heat when riding in normal conditions; and they aren't even good at climbing hills.

Plus of course the 250w ones are legal, and the 1000w ones illegal except in very limited situations.

I can foresee another issue now Ive looked... I think his motor may be brushless!

Three wires means brushless. That controller would have been pretty useless anyway. You need one with several levels of pedal assist, ideally sine-wave with an LCD.

Please show actual pictures of the bike, the motor and anything else you have.
