Fair enough. I have a hybrid bike already so I chose the bbs02b as this seems to be the ideal solution to give me a commuter boost and still work for me when I go on the trails.

Also, there is a relevant piece of information relating to the BBS02's battery consumption that I did not mention before. The yield of the motor depends very much on your cadence. It's bad under 30 rpm,
If you don't have the habit of spinning your chainring reasonably fast (80+ rpm), you should consider a geared hub kit.

Eclipse bikes have some nice batteries with Samsung 30Q cells.
You can be sure that any battery from Em3ev is top quality. Don't buy a battery from Aliexpress.

If you want a light hybrid type bike for commuting, I would have thought that a Q128 hub-motor would be much better than a BBS02.

I have a BBS02 500w with 42 tooth Bling Ring. With the power backed off to 20 amps, for the sake of longevity. I live in Nelson so similar riding conditions to Bingley. At the moment the motor is in a Giant Revolt cyclocross/ all road bike, with 35mm Schwalbe CX Comp. tyres, flat bars & bar extensions to help to get a bit more aero. It weighs 18.5 kilo's It is very stable on the road & can descend at 70 kpm. without feeling the least bit "Squirrelly" It hauls my 100kg ass up any paved road I've been able to find. It has a Woosh supplied 15 ah hl. Battery. I can do the "Grand Tour of Pendle" route ( find it on Pendle tourism site) it's 35 miles with no real flat bits on a charge. So a bike like that would do what you want ON THE ROAD. Off road it's nowhere near as good. The lack of suspension & relatively narrow tyres do not make for a pleasant ride. So I plan to put a rear hub motor (Probably a SWX02) in the bike & keep it for road use. The BBS02 I will put back into a hardtail mtb to use for trails & bridleways. I had thought that the one bike would do everything reasonably well, but it does seem that "You can't have your Kate & Edith too"

I plan on using a Carerra Crossfire 3 (2015) as the donor bike (specs: ***.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/hybrid-bikes/carrera-crossfire-3-hybrid-bike-2015).
30rpm cadence shouldn't be a problem, I'm not looking to coast, I still want to do most of the pedalling but get some help on the big hills.(the final hill is climb over a 1.5km) . I do have the option of taking the moors in as part of the journey which is where I thought a mid-mount and hybrid combo would help?

I think that might well be my challenge as the route takes in long stretches of road but then also canal, moors and bridalways. Maybe I could carry one bike on the other and switch when needed!?!

Would the Q128 limit me to the roads? I live in the moors so ideally would like to be able to take the rough with the smooth...

As long you don't get over ambitious with the offroading it should be OK the motor is not as much of a problem as the bike. I had the BBS02 in a Norco Charger and the frame triangle was too small to take the HL battery so I made a rubber suspension out of a Fiat Punto exhaust rubber, split down the middle& fitted it in a pannier. the battery is about the same weight as a hub motor. The bike behaved well. I think the Norco & a Whyte 605 that I had the bbs02 in for a while were both better do- it- all bikes than the Giant, but not nearly as fast on the road. You pay your money & you take your pick. You can't have everything. (Where would you put it all?)

no need to measure the frame. I have a few customers converting the Carrera with the Bafang BBS. This is how it looks fully loaded, mind you, darranna has a good eye.

no need to measure the frame. I have a few customers converting the Carrera with the Bafang BBS. This is how it looks fully loaded, mind you, darranna has a good eye.

As long as it is a bbs02 250w motor it is the same as the bbs02 500w.but the bbs01 motor is not the same motor as the bbs02 which is about 5mm wider

So why pay more for a BBS2 500w when they it's advertised side by side with a 250w, right?

The BBS02 250 and 350 W are identical. The controller is set at the factory to different A values. The 350 W also exists in a 48 V version which is a de-tuned 500 W version IIRC. The 500 W motor weighs about 500 g more so most likely contains more copper winding.

Now if you want to be confused... The BBS02 controller can be programmed to 18, 20 or 25 A which means you can have 250, 350 and 500 W versions of the same motor. Until recently there was one on the market, a 250 W stamped de-tuned BBS02 500 W motor.

Other than extra copper wire in the heavier 500 W motor they are identical and cost the same to manufacture. Price difference between a 250 W and 350 W motor are purely marketing differences - if it is more powerful it should cost more...

A BBS02 250 W reprogrammed to 25 Amps will be more prone to overheating if abused than the 500 W version at 25 A.

the BBS02B costs 8% more than the BBS01B. We reflect that difference in the selling price. For clarity, both are sourced directly from Bafang, same with spares, we don't reprogram the motors. The BBS02B motor core is slightly larger and heavier.
