More snow!!!

Here in the heart of the Midlands, Worcestershire, the snow is falling again for the second day or third day in a row..and it's falling heavy at moment!!.. yesterdays snow didn't stay on the roads or paths thankfully, despite quite a lot falling..the temperature is a bit warmer and it's been raining a lot and turning it to slush.

I hope we don't have a repeat of the other week and a proper heavy covering again! I'm hoping to test ride my new bike again at the weekend..and also had planned a 9 mile trip on Monday to the hospital in the next town, all being well at weekend with the tests.

A little squirrel that has been feeding off my bird table has decided to escape the snow and has taken up residence in my loft heh. I wouldn't mind, except the little ****** keeps running up and down and scratching/chewing things. I hope he's not the power cables!

With out wishing to be a killjoy. How come your happy to have what is no more than a long fluffy tailed rat in your house? Or are rats welcome as well ?

I don't mind the squirrels, I usually feed them as well as the birds and some become semi-tame.. but they can be a nuisance when they get in the loft.. I blocked off the entrance hole but this one seems to have found another way in! I had one in my flat 2 summers ago..it had babies in the loft and one of them came down through a hole in the cupboard ceiling and was trapped in my kitchen cupboard for 2 days!

I've seen the odd rat around here scavenging around the bin cupboards but never inside my flat or loft thankfully! There's even an urban fox that comes into my close occasionally scavenging bins.

Isnt it weird how we find squirrels acceptable and rats not when they both carry exactly the same deseases and are very close relatives

Squirrels are acceptable cos they go well in pies..

Squirrels and rats although both rodents are not related species, rats belong to the Muroidea family and grey squirrels belong to the Sciuridae family.

I'm not aware of grey squirrels carrying any contagious diseases (to humans). I've certainly never heard of any diseases being passed from grey squirrels to humans.

Im with you on this one paul......no comparison between lovely cute, healthy outdoor tree living squirrels and disease carrying, sewer living rats......

Phew.......thats exhausted me for tonight, will try to do better tomorrow when my brain cells wake up a bit more and I practice walking again...... bloody flu......

See its the fluffy tail. All rodents carry deceases most of which are not actually contagious just by direct contact but many which can kill. A squirrel is just as much a scavenger as any rat and you are far more likely to come into contact with a squirrel as they are less scared of us than rats. Dont get me wrong the chance of getting anything nasty of either is pretty slim but they are both just as likely to do it.

In my garden I shoot them, 166 since June 2005.

Grey squirrels are a pest, they've largely deposed our native reds, and in the Spring when remaining natural foods are in short supply, they happily eat songbird eggs and will even eat the chicks alive. Since they have no natural predators here, other then man, they often saturate areas of woodland to a high density with widespread harm to our native wildlife.

Did you know that in the UK it is illegal to release one once trapped, they have to be killed then by law?

God you're a hard man flecc.......you and your love of nature......how can you reconcile that with shooting grey squirrels ?
It isnt their fault that they were introduced here, they are only trying their best and acting naturally to survive in a hard world, like wild animals do....... bit like all of us really.

Come on, put your gun down and live and let live.
Who are we to decide whose right to live is more valid than anothers.......songbird, squirrel, fox, badger, rabbit, mouse, spider et al ??.........they are all nature at its best.......and worst.....
