More Power from Impulse 2 motor.

Hi, My wife has a Kalkhoff "Agattu Premium Impulse 8" with the Impulse 2 motor. She finds she cannot keep going on long hills due to a lack of strength, and has to stop and rest. She is not particularly interested in having power available over 15.5mph but would like more power on hills so she can keep going. 50 cycles says they can do no more.

Does anyone know how I can improve on this, apart from telling her to do some training!

( Please let's not get into the unreliability issues)

Before considering the possibility of more power, it's best to be aware of the implications of it being a torque controlled system. To get the maximum available power, whether increased or not, your wife will still have to put in the same continuous effort as at present. So a power increase probably wouldn't have the desired result of her using less effort. The torque sensing system the Impulse uses is the same as that in the Panasonic units and it's not adjustable or alterable.

For those in your wife's circumstances a torque controlled system isn't the best way to go, but unfortunately the best crank drives are usually torque controlled.

As for getting more power from the Impulse, it depends whether it has a shunt on its circuit board, and you'd need to open it up to find out. One of the Panasonic series had one and it's the shiny "goalpost" at the left of the top right white socket numbered 6 in this photo:

Either soldering one leg of the "goalpost" to reduce it's resistance or binding some thin wire across the two legs to do the same increases the power of the motor. Be aware though that the small motors these crank units use means you could easily have the motor fail very early if delivering more power. We haven't risked doing it long term on the Panasonic units.

And as said, even if achievable it wouldn't necessarily answer your wife's problem.

Thanks for that Flecc - I think I best leave it alone! It's not so much more power from the unit she wants as less input from her! She doesn't really mind stopping to rest, but I then get bored waiting!

4bound,
that's the downside of a torque sensor system. The rider has to input at least 25% of the required energy to maintain speed.
the only way to reduce her input other than getting a more suitable bike is to reduce speed.

Makes you wonder where these bike builders do their marketing research doesn't it?

1. sell the bike and buy her a Giant with a double chainring, when the going gets tough she changes down

2. sell the bike and build her a lovely new one with PAS

After all that's been said on this forum about the Impulse 2, I don't think it would be easy to sell, even though it is a great bike! Its not a problem on most rides, just the occasional mountain in North Wales, so we will carry on as now.
