Mid drive vs rear wheel.

Featured Replies

i'm on building a 750w mid drive and wonder what i should expect from it.

i had some bits left over and built a small 250w boardman pro last week a mix and match, even gave it front suspension. while out testing it a got talking to a couple of bike shop owners who were out on giant electrics. of coarse mid drive. they gave me a go, yes quite talky but i think my little 250w rear wheel had more go in it, of coarse there would be a lot of battery life difference.

i do perfer the 250w rear for power, but also engoy riding my 250 mid drive crossfire.

so what should i expect from a bafang 750w?

I have just finished a bbshd conversion with 48v 17.5ah battery

and everybody that has had a go on it says the exact same thing on returning

it.........F ing hell......mine is the 1000w version but peak power is slightly wound down from 30a to 28a because the voltage on a fully charge battery is nearer 58v

sorry to sound thick, but whats the bbshd stand for, im also sure this battery said 52v

Bbs is a bafang motor I think Hd stands for heavy duty (will be happy to be corrected)just checked ...mine was advertised as 52v as well (motor 48v)

my panda 250 gets me upto about 33kmh, so no where near as good, though ive never felt it was right. did ask for help but go no where, it also wont pull away from the throttle, once your moving it does but takes you up slowly. was not that impressed with mid drive because of it. so it may be just a crap mid drive with sadly not great after sales either.

to be honest i was going to get another 500w rear wheel, but when your pushing them they eat the battery, i have noticed that the mid drive last longer.

Mid Drive versus Hub drive,

think Fiesta 1.1 cc versus Merc/BMW 6 cyl Diesel

pace, grace, effortless power from the BBS mid-drive. Hills? What are they??

a big plus point with the BBS is that you can programme it to suit your own riding style

I have all three, rear 250w Hub and two BBS, the 750W and the HD.

Any rear hub motors i`ve seen and tried are really only toys in comparison.

And then there`s the noise factor, do you want to be confused with a milk float coming? Another thing, always carry a spoke wrench and cross your fingers you don`t have to fix a puncture if you have a Hub!

Having said all that the hub drive will be fast enough and if you live on flattish terrain the controller shouldn`t overheat that much.

You obviously haven't tries a MAC with a sine wave controller then. It'll blow your BBSHD into the weeds.

i have several rear wheel and being honest, the 250 i have seems better than the 250 panda mid drive. just the battery's don't last me long. i havnt messed with any settings and can hit 28mph out of my 500w on a recumbent trike, which i thinks not bad.
The Panda mid drive aka a bbs01 ?, being a customer unit re-logoed may well be programmed to the customers requirements. It is possible the throttle only works once the pas has kicked in.

never took any notice if thats the case, if you try to use it from a standing start it makes funny noises as though it wants to go but cant. but next time im out i will see if the PAS kicking in is the trigger. though if thats the case why didnt panda tell me. also i have to say on that front my rear wheels are far better on the throttles.

though i must say, ive had the mid drive on a couple of bikes and also rear wheel on the same bikes, and i keep going back to the same bike. so i supose the bike is just as important as the electric set up.
