D8veh and myself went out for a ride today. We now both have the Bafang 500w CST motors and the BMSBattery 20aH shrinktube battery. The sun shone and we managed about 40miles along various cycle routes in Shropshire, mainly single track roads.

Our latest toys (apart from the bikes) are two two way radios that we got from Maplin. They were £29.99, but we paid about another rip-off £25 for clip-on ear-pieces and microphones. They're really good for having a chat while riding along and figuring out where you are when you get separated.

We stopped at the pub at Uffington, which is a regular stop-off point for cyclists, but today we had it to ourselves, and we were able to sit outside on the balcony drinking pints of Shropshire Gold whilst admiring our bikes. Shortly after leaving the pub we spotted a couple of Lycra lads just starting a mile long climb. We chased after them and gave a polite "good afternoon" as we passed them at maximum speed to leave them wondering what we had for breakfast as both our bikes are very quiet and stealthy - see photos. I know it's childish, but I'm 43 years old and need to hang on to what youth I still have.

Later, we stopped at the confluence of the rivers Tern and Roden to take photos before heading for the route through the Severn gorge before returning home. What a brilliant day!

A couple of questions if I may, did you put the motor in the wheel or was it already made up and is the battery lifepo4.

Thanks

The motors don't come in kit form. You have to build the wheel yourself. You can get the BPM version in kit form, and it has exactly the same power characteristics and is cheaper. The only advantage of the CST is that you can have a 9 speed cassette with 11T top gear. TheBPM takes a 7 speed free-wheel. Sometimes you can squeeze in a 8 speed one, but 11T topp gear ones are hard to find.

Refreshing.

What a joy to read a post by someone actually out and about on their bike.

All the posts about legal this legal that, too many watts. Accidents, what if this or that happens etc etc.
I was beginning to think that it may be too risky or dangerous to use any cycle, or e-bike

I,m going to get out on mine and enjoy the ride tomorrow. May even stop at a pub myself.

I will of course fully wrap myself in a large bundle of cotton wool to protect both myself and others in the event of any collision.

Many thanks

The sun will shine and it'll be relatively warm tomorrow, so go for it. I'll be out again looking for lycras to race. There should be plenty.

Just a liitle story (true) to help make you feel even better:

Saneagle and myself were out again last week trying out our new two-way radios, which we had left on the default channel 1. Half way through our ride along a single track road, we were side-by-side. so didn't need our radios. We were trying to talk directly, but transmissions kept comung over the radio interrupting us. We started listening to them and it went something like this:
"Up there behind the trees"
"No go a bit further"
"Push push push push"
"OK, let the dogs go"
"Let the dogs go now"

We tried to figure out what they were up to, and then wondered if it was badger baiting or something like that.
Saneagle called me over the radio, " Alpha 2, this is alpha 1. They're up there on the hill behind the trees with the dogs. I should be there in about two minutes"

We never heard another dicky bird out of them.

Probably a couple hard at it. :)

I was out for a coast ride yesterday and happened across this air sea rescue in progress:

BBC News - Fifteen anglers rescued after wave hit Sunderland pier

Very exciting.

Actually, it was an air sea tunnel rescue.

There is a tunnel running under the pier from the shore to the lighthouse.

Several of the anglers were brought back through it because it's too dangerous to walk on the pier with the waves crashing over.

I didn't know there was a tunnel, but I suppose it was built to allow the keepers access to the lighthouse in all weathers.

I think this is the tunnel that had been forgot about and discovered a few years ago. They found a bike down there that the keeper used to cycle up and down with.

Ah, could be.

It's quite a long way, the anglers don't routinely have access to the tunnel, but a lot of them cycle on the top of it to get to the end where most of them fish.

Worth pointing out for those who don't know the area, the pier is a breakwater so is solid and made of masonry, not a deck pleasure pier supported by cast iron.

Yes Hartlepool is the same, not sure about a tunnel tho. When I was a toddler my Dad would take me fishing there and the best fishing was in the rough weather, so he would tie me to the railings. Something my mother was never happy about :D

The bloke who was injured in Sunderland had just packed up to come off.

One of the others out there said he was holding the railing on one side when the wave hit him.

He was swept clear across the pier and slammed into the railing on the other side which broke his leg.

Better that than being swept off - no way back then in those conditions.

The pair of you have provided a ready made case with this thread should the blind eye approach, which is also illegal, be changed.

To me, the pair of them have provided a ready made case for this old saying:

"Laws are for the guidance of wise men and the blind obedience of fools."

This old fool would have been more interested to find out the result of if they had stopped the racing cyclists and ask them to swop bikes and proceed up the hill both unassisted.
Theoretically they would have arrived at the same time.
