Loose nuts

Hi all when i first got my bike ( from a seller on ebay ) the rear wheel nuts were loose , i thought that the seller just hadn't bothered to tighten them up properly , but after my first 6 mile ride to work and back today i'v e noticed they have come loose again , i did tighten them up really well the night before , any ideas what i can do to stop them coming loose again .

thanks .

The spindle on the motor wheel has to resist the the efforts of the motor to turn it in the opposite direction to the wheel.

In the absence of a proper torque arm it is only the wheel nuts preventing this rotation and the rotation itself can loosen the nuts. Nice big washers under the nuts can help, as can threadlocking compound or another pair of nuts acting as locknuts. It can be a problem finding additional nuts though as they usually have uncommon fine threads.

It is very important that the motor spindle is secure as rotation can damage the drop-out slots and if it continues can rip the wiring from the motor spindle.

Thanks all , for now i've put some Loctite on the threads , if they come loose again i may try making up some sort of locking washer .

Ps also found the front disc bolts had come loose , is it common on electric bikes for nuts and bolts to become loose more often ?

Not really, but some of them may not have been tight enough in the first place. Today's badly maintained road surfaces often don't help.
