I did throw this one on the Endless Sphere forum, but wanted to get as many opinions as possible:

I'm after top quality nuts to fit the axle on a rear MAC motor. The supplied nuts seem to have quite a bit of free play, and I fear that the thread will strip at some stage whilst tightening.

Someone suggested using automotive nuts, as they apparently have more threads???

Also, what's best, one Nyloc type nut or Nord-Lock washer and nut?

It's not the nuts that are low tolerance, it's the axle itself.

If you get a nut with more threads, then it wont fit the axle. Or do you mean a wider nut and not more tpi?

You'll be fine with the supplied nuts - I wouldn't use a Nord lock or Nyloc nut. You shouldn't be relying on the nuts to stop the axle turning anyway - you should have good quality torque arms on both sides with the MAC motor.

I think they meant the automotive nuts are deeper in size, so more threads contacting the axle.
I realise now that changing the thread count would create a problem, and I posted a question on ES that probably makes me look really dumb to our friends in America

Nyloc nuts will appear to be tighter, but the threads won't be any different, so you won't get any additional strength - only a false impression that they're stronger.

Have you tried several different M14 nuts? It's possible that your original nuts were over-tapped. They do vary from batch to batch, especially Chinese ones.

I'm gonna give Frank's nuts a go :p

I rarely need to remove the wheel from the bike, maybe every third year to replace the tyre, so I'm only after a fit and forget solution.
The Nyloc's will give some peace of mind.
