Hello - maybe a numpty question - but using a Turnigy charger to charge this 28v pack - doesn't the Turnigy reqiure a 30v input - I've seen it apparently done with just12v feeding it?

They step the input voltage up to what is required.
I use mine for 6 cells and it runs off a modified 12v pc PSU, just make sure the supply you use has enough high enough amp rating.

Nearly all Lipo chargers work from a 12V supply. An old power supply from a PC case will do.

There's also mains versions of the chargers that have the power supply built in, which are a bit more expensive than the 12v versions.

My charger receives 11.7 V from the ATX power supply under load and charges the 6S battery to 25 V in just under 2 hours at 0.5C.

Usually the chargers work within a voltage input range. From memory my turnigy accucel 6 takes 10v to 18v (or similar)

Basically the charger will increawe the power supply voltage to the correct charge voltage at the cost of amps.

For example I have a 12v 5a power supply. This allows me to charge my 22.2v packs at around 1.8a . The charger uses a couple of amps available to convert into increased voltage.

If I try to go higher than 1.8a then I get a voltage error as the charger simply doesn't have enough amp and volt supply to play with

Yes I was cheating a bit above...

The 4S battery will charge at 5 Amps and the 6S at 3.9 Amps so 0.39C the charger says that it has 7 Amps available. I haven't tried "fast charge" option because I want my batteries to last until winter.

When I get a real Lipoly pack I will buy an AC powered twin charger with 1x100 W and 1x120W output, 4S on one parallel charging board and 6S on another. In theory the packs should charge in just under 2 hours at between 0.5C and 1C that is fine for my needs.

I have a pair of BC168's fed by 12v 350w psu's to charge my 6 x 6s and 6 x 4s but this can take 4 - 6hrs from a storage charge of 38v, The 168's are also good for balancing and discharging but mainly use them to charge to storage mode or final topping off. For quick charging I parallel bulk charge all 12 packs using two Meanwells psu's one 15v adjusted to 16.6v and one 24v adjusted to 24.9v , the 15v charges at 0.75c (takes about 1hr 05) and the 24v at 0.5c (takes about 1hr 35) as the charge nears its end the amps steadily drop off and as long a the packs are pretty well balanced I have not had any go high and all are within 0.005 v - 0.030v.

Well, thanks very much for the quick replies, gents - seems I'm worrying about things that don't need worrying about!!

Next question - my Giant Twist battery pack uses a 4 pin 180 deg DIN plug for charging - anyone ever come across this bizarre layout - and where can I get one? I intend to use a Turnigy charger, and fit a balance connector.

I use a Dell DA-2 Charger m8811 12V 18A to power a pair of ImaxB6 chargers.
It cost £1.91 on ebay !
I use them if I need to balance my packs although thats maybe only 2 or 3 times a year and then only if I discharge down to 3.5v per cell.
I use a pair of Meanwell 350 watt chargers for bulk charging pairs of 16Ah Multistars at 16.9A and charge to 4.1v so plenty of headroom if a cell goes a bit high (not happened in 18 months)..
