I never change the front gears, only ever use the middle cog to access all 8 speeds at the rear. I decided I wanted a larger front cog but in the middle position for the chain alignment.
I didn't have any luck finding something so come up with the idea of buying a triple front with removable rings and moving the outer one to where the middle ring was and use the middle ring for strength, as this.

I cannot try this as I need a special tool to fit the whole thing so can anyone see a problem with this as I am not convinced the larger ring is sitting flat.
Any other easier solutions I should have done first?

I felt the same as you and though I could have managed on the outer ring the chain would have been badly crossed on the lower gears. As an experiment I changed the middle ring from 26 to 36 and find this far better and can use the middle ring almost all the time now.
Works fine for me but we all have different requirements so just a thought.
Dave.
Edited, that should read 32 to 36, not 26 to 36.

I'm currently using 38t on the middle and would like maybe 42t or 44t.

With my 104 BCD spider the middle ring has a larger inner diameter so the big ring will not fit... It could be filed down to fit I guess.
