So have been lurking for a while and have a kalkhoff aguttu c8 hs which has been awesome, power/range and overall ownership faultless so far.
But after a weekend at castlewellan forest in the camper van I think I need something with a Bit of off roadness.I tried the kalkhoff on a couple of the easier trails without any problems..
The KTM looks like a good bit of kit but is it more on road than off road.I don't need an extreme mountain bike just something to get on the trails and be able to climb hills.also what sort of range would be expected as I am a bit spoilt with the kalkhoff and it would be needed as a second road bike when away touring in the camper.
The macina cross is around the right price for me..
Next problem is I am in northern Ireland and seem to be well behind when it comes to e bike shops..so no local bikes to look at..
All info welcome..
Thanks Steven..

It's a road bike - 622-42 tyres. Macina Bold has 559-60 tyres so much better off road. Range with 300 battery between 20-40, depends on how much assistance is required.

Can you just fit some fatter tyres with tread to your current bike, they would smooth out the ride a bit and increase traction.
A lot of great hard tail MTB's are a very similar layout to your bike.

I doubt if there would be enough clearance to fit wider tyres as they increase in diameter - I'm assuming a 662 rim (28"). 622 rims with wider tyres are 29". For completeness, 559 rims are 26" Check out the ISO bicycle tyre designations.

Mine doesn't feel that good on large loose stones, having said that I dislike any rough riding these days and I do run about 90 psi in the tyres. Battery range from 16 miles on 300 w/h battery, that's with a lot of climbing.
The standard tyres don't roll that well, it is possible to pedal about the assistance level, but you can't keep up with normal racing bikes, perhaps it is actually comparable to normal hybrids though.
It has got a lot of room for bigger tyres though.

Steven,

For serious off-roading the Haibike is amazing Haibike | Electric Mountain & Touring Bikes | Sales & Service

But for 'soft-roading' on bumpy tracks and trails I can confirm that the fat Big Apples tyres do give a much greater feeling of security than the skinny tyres on the Agattu. These tyres are now fitted as standard on the Kalkhoff Sahel range of bikes which otherwise are very similar in look, spec and ride to your existing Agattu. They also pretty good on the road so no real compromise there.

If you live in the south-west you can come and try one of our Sahel Compacts on a range of bumpy tracks. If you don't, why not make a weekend break out of it?

Ah, I read it in the earlier post but had forgotten it by the time I replied. Doh!

A longer break then maybe!?

Cheers guys I really need a bit of range as well.the aguttu is taking me 50 km easily with only one light out of three going off so I think the KTM might be out.
The thinking started when my wife tried the aguttu and loved it.we were going to look at ladies versions but thought if we got something more off road'ish I could tinker off road a bit but we could still use them on the road..so range is pretty important.
Yeah in northern Ireland so can't try before I buy.
In fact was out last Saturday and we stopped at local bike shop,I waited outside and the wife want in to ask if they sold e bikes, she said he looked horrified and told her not to waste her money as they only do about 10 miles and can't use them in the rain! She laughed and left the shop..
I can organise collection on the mainland for the right bike at the right price.

OK I am now thinking of getting a set of big apple tyres for the aguttu..has anyone fitted a set and which size?
My rims are marked 622×19c and the tyres are 42×662(28×1.6).
I have been looking at the big apples and the narrowest ones are 50×622 which I think is only 8mm wider than mine..is that enough?
After that some models have 55mm and 60 mm widths..so any recommendations on size or type..
I will try and do more research over the next few days..
