Take the right hand side motor cover off and check to see if the gear that drives the chain is in good condition. Missing teeth or worn spline teeth of the gear could be a cuprit.

If they motor is not repairable when investigated what sort of price is a new motor as the quote from 50cycles seemed excessive

50 Cycles supplies replacement sprockets for £16.95. These may just be for the 36v models.

I have recently replaced the motor on my 2008 Pro Connect with a 2011 motor supplied by Martin at e-bikeshop. Martin is very helpful and a fair chap to deal with so definitely worth talking to.

I didn't approach 50 Cycles, but £500 for a motor raises the question as to whether it is economically viable to repair the bike. If you are still using your original battery, you must factor in the possibility of replacing that any time soon too. Having said that, my 2008 batteries are still going strong.

I have seen motors on eBay for around £350 from Germany, but they are rare and you need to keep looking. Also Pro Golla are worth keeping an eye on.

Prices tend to vary and he 26 volt unit is currently showing out of stock and a price of 500 Euros. This does tend to go up and down though.

Member d8vh did have a 36 volt motor and battery for sale from his damaged BH bike. The motor mounting is the same as the 26 volt, but I don't know if the battery frame lock is the same or if the 36 volt battery connection dock will fit your bike. Logic says it should, but that needs confirming.

It's worth hanging on until the right deal comes along.

Also as I was trying to work out whether the unit was working the lights on the control unit on handlebars flashed
All 3 power lights and then all 3 mode lights
Anyone know if this is significant before indelible deeper

If it settled with the three power lights and one mode light the electrical side should be ok. All six staying on indicates an electrical fault for which there are no spares since the circuit board is encapsulated and sealed into the r/h half of the crankcase. I don't know of a specific meaning for the six on, Panasonic don't release any information of that type.

Basically it's repair by unit change.

Once you've opened the motor and found the cause, the solution might be a lot simpler than buying a new motor. Find out what's wrong first!

I have stripped and opened the motor carefully but there is nothing jumping out at me as a source of the problem
Does anyone have any suggestions

Since you have a motor whirring sound, it could be that the motor is driving the large gear wheel but the freewheel at it's heart is slipping, so check for that. However, that is unlikely in a needle roller and ramp freewheel.

Another possibly is a failure or displacement of the Hall sensor board that sits alongside the motor, some Hall circuit conditions causing motor noise without the motor turning.

If you can find the roller clutch, check it. It might be jammed open, and just needs freeing off and a bit of lubrication. Rotate the output shaft in each direction to see what's slipping. It should slip in the anticlockwise direction. Did it slip a bit before you lost your drive, or did you park it for a long time, and then the next time you used it, it had no drive? What exactly were the symptoms?
