I spotted that a little earlier today and gave it a try. Propaganda it may be, but it's good to see European manufacturers fighting back after years of resigned apathy in the face of cheap oriental imports.

It's what the market has needed for a long time to stimulate necessary improvements in quality.

Alle Raleigh Bikes werden in Produktionsstätten in Europa und Asien nach höchsten Qualitätsstandards gefertigt.
All Raleigh bikes (Kalkhoff is also being sold as Raleigh) are made in production sites in Europe and Asia under the highest quality standards.

I wonder how big a % is made in Asia.

I think it's mainly some components, like the Shimano gearhub, hubdyno, brake parts including cables etc. Frames and forks I'm sure are German, and Germany may well make all the wheel components. The lights and tyres are German too.

Even in England we still make brake blocks, pads and spokes!

Might be interesting for those considering a Kalkhoff purchase.
I did consider an Kalkhoff when they had the special offer on before the new year, but I got no reply to my email to them so I figured they had had too large an uptake on the discount, and I had missed out. Does anyone know if there is a waiting list, or anyone else selling them apart from 50 cycles. I live in Scotland so if there is a local supplier selling them here somewhere I would love to know.

the kalkhoff are still discounted on the website. so you can still order at under the stated full retail value.there has been alot of discussion on this forum about the delays in delivery.basically pay now and take delivery in march/april. i have found the best way to reach 50 cycles is via the "live chat available" icon in the middle of the screen on their webpages.

50cycles are the sole UK agent with exclusive rights to the Kalkhoff brand.

They are trying to set up a dealer network for them, so there's hope of dealers in Scotland. They may appreciate it if you have a dealer in your area that you can strongly recommend Branwen.

I've been asking at every bicycle shop I go past and no one seems interested in selling the Kalkoff's so far, not even the shop that tried to re-cell my battery before the spark at my work finally did it. They already have a bunch of Gazelle Easygliders as their top of the range bike. The only place really interested was a shop that sells mobility aids, who thought they could sell them VAT free to those with disabilities as well as to regular customers if they put one in the window. It's an interesting market for electric bikes, I saw some recumbant ones a few years back which use very little human power input for disabled people on the TV. The idea was that they didn't look disabled on a bike, but also that the motion kept muscles not being used as much from becoming atrophied.

Thanks Joe for that info, but I spent too much now having my re-celled battery re-celled again now, and will have to wait for a Kalkoff, but I got a good Saturday job now to pay for it by the end of the summer at least now.

It could be worth trying The Electric Cycle Company in Edinburgh. They deal with various manufacturers and would most likely be the best company to deal with. There number is 0131 553 4900.

Thats the company that recelled my battery so distastrously, (they dont sell Agattu) and the wheel rim repair they were doing at the same time had to be fixed by The Bicycle Repair Man a few weeks later as I could tell something was wrong. A thread had been completely stripped, which could have been very dangerous. There was no way they coud have been unaware they had stripped it too. I didnt see any point in taking it back to The Electric Cycle Company for the wheel rim mess up, as his guarantee to give me my money back if the recell didnt work was one he didnt live up to.

Good news though, The Bicycle Repair Man is now thinking of stocking Agattus after I bent his ear on the matter. He said to call at the end of February. He is sorting out payment plans too, so it should be affordable for me to get the luxury version

Raleigh frames are all made in the far east and I suspect it is the same for most of Derby cycles brands.

It's important to distinguish between the Raleigh UK bike marketing company which relies on Far Eastern manufactured bikes and the completely separate brand name Raleigh gmbh which is owned by Derby Cycles of Germany.

Derby Cycles have changed very considerably since the days under Raleigh UK ownership, and as an independent German company have more than quadrupled production to 2500 bikes a week and introduced their sophisticated e-bikes, something Raleigh UK never did and still don't do, relying on the partnership with Powabyke for those.

Derby make their bikes including their Raleigh branded models in house these days and 50cycles once had a video showing Kalkhoff Agattu frame production, though the current video doesn't show the tube welding stages, only the bare metal ones going through checking, painting and testing stages.
