I rang the highways and they said to me a while a go if you are caught using a 350 watt you can be prosecuted for the following

1) no tax
2) no insurance
3) must wear full face helmet at all times
4) must have a proper number plate fitted to the bike
5 must of passed a moped test too
If you have done the following you are allowed to ride on the roads where ever you like with no problems but if you haven't they can come on you
like a tonne of bricks.

if you do choose to get one be careful where you ride because someone could have you for it and their is nothing you can do about it and you could
lose the bike altogether the highways say they can compound them in a heartbeat because the law states only a 250 watt motor allowed on uk roads.

i was thinking hard about getting one a couple of years a go and i couldn't be bothered with the hassle of been stopped etc or been caught by the police and just thought it would be easier just to have 250 watts then i won't have to worry about it at all then .

Full face helmet? You can't ride a moped with an open helmet now in the UK?

We still can, but the person advising that has probably seen the current EU intention to make full face compulsory, and rather jumped the gun.

Every time I imagine pedalling with a full face motorbike helmet on my head (1.5 kg for an expensive one) I get the shudders... And for 38 km... o_O in the sun...

When I was visiting a 50 Cycles shop a couple of times, I saw some existing customers bringing back their S-pedelec bikes for services (and some already in the shop waiting to be serviced), and none of them had a registration plate attached at the rear, despite the placeholder for it (and the staff didn't seem to mind either).

On their S-Pedelec bikes, Kalkhoff have a different type of rear rack installed, with some mount for a registration plate (so it's quite apparent when one is missing).

Yes, that bracket is for the smaller S pedelec registration plate that they have in Germany.

The DfT have already argued within the EU against smaller plates, so even if a miracle happens and we eventually get the S class, we'll be stuck with full size motorbike plates.

Now there is a good reason to carry full sized pannier bags on each side permanently if ever I heard one: for aerodynamics :D and not getting the plate caught on the garden gate

Like this Dutch set on one of my bikes, they'd cover any size number plate! :)
