just got in after 24 miles and snapped the thumb throttle

I have just snapped the plastic thumb throttle after pressing it to hard on a 24 miles run and will it glue back? or do I need to replace and can I use a generic one or do I have to pay Optibikes prices?

Hi Steve How many wires an wot colors

If it is 3


Red + 5 volts

Black Ground

Other wire is volts from Hall sensor

Any old thumb throttle will do or twist throttle

I can see 3 wires red , black and green and they go from the throttle to the headlight
and I havent opened the headlight yet.
I was hoping it would glue back I dont want to open the headlight and start stripping it out.
I have got some Araldite stuff in a twin syringe is it worth a shot or am I wasting my time?

Hi Steve looks like a standard twist throttle will do

Just check on the colors

i have plenty off them

also thumb throttles coming

There are 3 wires the one in the middle is hard to see and as I said the wires go to the headlight
and I dont want to rewire and can I just fit a thumb switch or not?

Superglue should hold it for a bit steve but it may break again eventually, these things are so cheap (about five quid from China) you may as well just replace it, I think they're pretty standard.

Its not the cost I dont want to strip the wires out it goes to the healight and then I presume to the controller and I dont want to make it in to a bigger job than it is!
I suppose I could join the new wires to the old wires inside the headlight..

I see what you mean.. you haven't had that bike long have you..considering the price you paid for it and it's only a low-cost repair, I reckon your dealer should fix it under warranty..might be worth a try? Your fingers are too manly for that little thumb throttle that's what it is, don't know your own strength ;-)

Your fingers are too manly for that little thumb throttle that's what it is, don't know your own strength ;-)

Superglue or Cyanoacrylate to give it's correct name won' fix that. You might have a chance with epoxy resin and metal reinforcement, but it's not really worth the hassle, better to fit a new full or half width throttle.

I think Franks got one for me.. and the glue is a resin type u mix it.

Steve, opinion seems to be against an Araldite repair, but if you want to attempt one this is what you do . Drill a pair of holes in each piece so that they line up with each other . Rough up the mating surfaces to provide a good key for the glue . Cut some small diameter threaded metal dowels so that they are a good fit in the main moulding and Araldite them in . Coat the mating surfaces with glue and on the threads going in to the smaller broken piece and keep pressed home or clamp until hard . I`ve repaired loads of spectacle frames successfully this way with roughed up brazing rod . Of course some plastic won`t take glue, but it`s worth a try before going to plan B .

I tried glueing without the rod and it didnt work and your idea sounds alot better.

I agree with RoadieRoger, an epoxy resin adhesive like araldite and metal reinforcement such as a threaded bolt with the head removed coated with the adhesive and inserted into holes drilled into both parts.

I don't believe any glue will hold that. If you can't wait for a new one, you could try drilling it and pushing a longish brass countersunk machine screw through from the inside and a nut on the outside and then use that as the lever.

To get a replacement throttle, don't worry about the number of wires because some have additional features. They nearly all have three wires for the throttle. Some have one or two extra for the switch and/or one or two more for the LED battery indicators. You can choose whether you use the extra features.

Steve, I've snapped two of those exact same thumb throttles so far. If I were you I would consider a different throttle, maybe a half width twist throttle? They seem indestructible in comparison.
