Just acquired this Alien ebike 36V 250W Front Hub.

When pushing the bike forwards, the red led on the power bar of the throttle lights up, as though the front wheel is acting like a generator.
The bike does have lights fitted that are wired to the controller.
The wheel is making a very loud rubbing noise when power is applied, when pushing forward I can feel friction and the wheel clicks in segments as it turns.
When reversing the wheel has a dragging effect
Could the bearings need replacing within the motor hub or just need new grease ?
Anyone got any idea's ?

I've added a picture of the hub, not sure of its make!

Cheers for any advice
Bryan

The wheel's been full of water and will be rusty inside. Don't try and turn it any more. You have to dismantle it and clean it with penetrating oil.

Stripped the motor and no water damage or Rust....
Very minimum amount of grease within
Planetary gear cogs have play around the inner bearing on two cogs
the third gear cog is a snug fit.
Teeth are okay on all three cogs.
I might as well change the three cogs & bearings whilst apart, does anyone know where I can purchase these items ?
Measurement across the face is 54cm and width is 12cm

OK. It's not the motor I thought it was. It must be a very old one. Can we see some pictures of the inside of the motor?

Normally, these motors have a clutch inside, so the motor doesn't turn when you push the bike forward. Yours generates, so either the clutch is stuck or it doesn't have a clutch.

The rubbing noise and resistance you felt can be coming from the controller even though it feels like a mechanical problem in the motor, so the motor might be OK. Try re-greasing it first, leave it disconnected from the controller to see if it spins more freely. If it does, you have a blown MOSFET in the controller.

Does the motor have hall sensors (5 thin wires in addition to the three phase wires)?

41 teeth on the gears is an unusual size. Replacements won't be easy.

It is a Brush motor with just two output wires
Count the teeth starting at the Black Mark, it counts to 41, although some might say it's "42"

Brushed motor changes things again. You can disregard everything I previously said.

The nylon cogs are the same as fitted to early Bafang hubs.
Just ordered 3 new gear cogs from China via GreenBikeKit
Bafang nylon gears for bldc hub motors replacement(42teeth/36teeth/33teeth/28teeth)
Item Number 8fun-gear

Should be here within 8 days, then give a good greasing, re assemble and fingers crossed...

Well, you can always hope. Maybe you'll be lucky, but I have a set of Bafang BPM gears on the table in front of me, and no matter how many times I count them, it still comes to 42.

I'll hope for the best then, always come in useful on another occasion if they are different.

Looks like my old ypw-01 motor but mine is brushless it also has your 41T gears.

Try emailing xiongda and post your pictures as I think it might have been manufactured by them.

You can email their customer service here, at yona@xiongdamotor.com.cn

If you do not have any joy you could try replacing the bearings in the nylon gears as the teeth appear to be OK.

Also check the little sun gear for any play as this could cause vibrations to be transferred to the planet gear bearings when running and over time cause them to fail, I think there may be a bearing/bush behind it and it transmits all the motor load at that end of the rotor shaft to the planet gears.

You would have to break the motor casing down further to find out.

A knackered rotor bearing could cause the rotor to come into contact with the stator and produce the noise you described earlier.

Nylon teeth are in good health, just the centre area where the bearing sits, has a wobble effect around the bearings edge.
Checked the centre spindle and no play in that at all, so just hope the email works fingers crossed eh.
