Is this the future?

My brother-in-law who spends most of his time these days in Ebay, which is somewhere in the Amazon region, has sent me the attached link because he knows I ride an EAPC.

Now, this may be old hat and could have been discussed to death in these pages for all I know but I thought I'd throw it up in case it's of interest to any readers here. I should add that I shan't be buying one any time soon but their pricing arrangements for bulk purchase seem a little odd unless I'm not reading the blurb correctly.

The all-in integrated front wheel has been "invented" a number of times in recent years, the newest ones often controlled from a smartphone. Clearly the "inventors" aren't doing their marketing research first.

But all of them fail. Too much weight in the front wheel centre, often inadequate power due to necessarily small motor and battery, no possibility of charging the battery indoors without the whole bike coming in, tied to the maker's battery which could be very expensive, question mark over future spares and battery supply etc.

Existing kits and e-bikes are so good these days that there's little need for these or much market room for them.

Not for me thanks, another thing you need a bleeding smart phone for.

I'd rather walk.

I can remember the 'Copenhagen' wheel being discussed but I think it failed to take off for the reasons you just mentioned flecc.

A key reason to have one that's often claimed is that one can instantly swap a bike from normal to pedelec or back again, according to one's mood.

A classic answer to a problem that doesn't exist, the number of people who would want to do that must be negligible.

Storck - remember them? - sold their rear hub ebike with similar spiel.

Or rather they didn't sell it because they no longer offer ebikes, at least in the UK.

Are there any mechanical brakes on this kit? Or is it just done by electromagnetic braking only? Would this kit be legal for use in UK (it has no cadence sensor on the pedals?) I see that the battery is removable for indoors charging (the blue U shaped lump, which has rather more capacity and voltage than I was expecting).

Regards,

Alistair G.
