You are absolutely right, city and town rides so won't suit the road racers and mountain bike trails.

I bought these, £12.99 for a pair. They're heavy, add drag, thick enough, and will do fine for winter use. The marathons would have been 70 quid.

The tyres really will dig in to the muck when pushed and keep you moving.




Looking at the airless tyres; equivalent to 100 psi, not with my backside on the seat, thank you!

I don't think the airless tyres work very well off road, if in fact they work at all?
Ive only seen them on the Specialized bike, who I believe had the tyre company design them specifically for one of their models.

They are already just in some major bike retailers it will be interesting to see how they work out when we can see feedback from owners.

My Hard Nine with Rapid Robs on, is great off road.

My Hard Nine with Big Bens on, is great on the road.

I thought Winter was just going to be a straight road only exercise, but stupidly I am still going off road and it is tricky on Big Bens.

I am looking for road manners ( quiet, smooth running, good handling and braking) with some off road grip ( the ability to NOT slip side ways at the first sign of dew and be able to go uphill in muddy not quagmire conditions ), do Marathon Plus MTB or Land Cruiser Plus work ?

I had 26*2.1Kenda Nevegals on my Giant which were great for the muddy trails around the Highlands. But I always noticed the extra effort required compared to the 26*1.9 Specialised Crossroads fitted to earlier bike. So on electrifying the Giant full sus bike, most of the extra 10 kilo on the rear half since no room inside frame, I changed the tyres to the Specialise Crossroads.Much quieter on tarmac and fine on forestry tracks. Somewhat light at the front now but only noticable climbing up 7Staines trails. The tyres have a flack jacket and never had a puncture despite hammering down red runs. All the pain was in braking the near 25 kilo bike with cable operated discs! The tyres do wiggle a bit on thick mud but the rear wheel, with that weight on it, never fails to push the bike through deep and long puddles. They look a little spindly after the Kenda's but you get used to this. Not pricey either.

Some said hybrid tyres were going to be Jack of all trades master on none but I like them a lot and the great big belt has to help with punctures, fingers crossed.

Eddie found some good reviews so I went with the crowd.

Sure. I was lucky to get it from Pauls Cycles in 2010 when they were selling off at half price. For only 2009 Giant put full suspension on their hard tail FX MTB.After that it reverted back. Not unlike Trance frame. Did not shorten all wiring to fit as may transfer to another bike in the future. Hence the slightly untidy leads! Throttle had to be mounted upside down to clear the gear lever.

Marathon Plus MTB's are surprising mud pluggers !

The secret is to push to the back of the seat so your weight is more over the rear wheel and pedal sitting down. If you stand up and bring the weight forward you lose traction.

They are narrow, so dig in and and drive through rather than ride over the surface like my Rapid Robs. They must clear the mud out of the tread otherwise they would just spin. If you want to start off in mud, you need to sit down to start pedalling to go anywhere.

The breaking and control on wet leaves and greasy tracks is also reassuring.

Two weeks running I have ended up going through mud, but I love it now I have the Marathon Plus's.

The reason for hybrids is that I have to get from the mud back to home and I like to do some road mileage in the dark nights as well.
