Since i assume that all the contributors knew all this, why have we had 38 postings?.
It's a forum, a bit of bickering, a bit of toys and prams and a sprinkling of mine's bigger/better than yours. All part and parcel. Hopefully the OP has waded through all of that and gained some useful info. Right, onto the next big debate.....

Had a few feelings of trpidation before coming out but people are just so friendly, unbelievably industrious, scenery wonderful, weather fantastic and food cheap... Roads are just mad mad mad but they drive quite slowly.. Definitely coming back.
Going on afternoons jeep tour....5 hrs exploring sand dunes and local beauty spots. 20 dollars for 2 of us !!!
Love place.

An inverter question:

Say I want to plug a 300 W cooking apparatus into a 600 W 12-220v sine wave inverter, how do I calculate the Wh? If I use it for 20 minutes will it use 100 Wh from the 12v battery with say 20% loss so 120 Wh?

The calculation is right, but I'm not sure that you can trust the 300w rating. That might be the output power. Instead, you should look at the label to see what the input current is, then multiply that times 230 to get its consumption, then add, say 20% to that to include the inverter losses.

Don't forget that your lead battery only has about half the useful capacity stated, so 100Ah is actually 50Ah. Also, you can get substantial cable losses on the 12v side because of the high current, so keep cable length to an absolute minimum and as thick as possible.

There can be issues with start up current as opposed to steady state...stuff like pumps, compressors etc can have 6 ( and over) x steady state to get them going...Compressor fridges can be a nightmare for it...had a fridge on a boat and it would stall a 1.5 kw generator even tho it was only rated at 300w or so...Worth checking...had to contact manufacter to find start up current...not mentioned on plaque at all..( Worst culprits tend to be motor stuff that starts under load) Will trip inverter...
