I think they're all being a bit unfair. Firstly, the road was a designated cycle route, so you'd expect to come a cross groups of cyclists on a nice day. Secondly, people are saying that they were unnecessarily riding side by side, but it could have been that the knocked off cyclist was overtaking, especially as he comes from behind the camera view and you see him moving forward all the time relative to the one filming.

The comments, made by non cyclist drivers on this and other articles dealing with accidents and cycling safety, are appalling. I was hit in a similar manner, as the young man in the video, three months ago. It was a glancing blow that resulted in a bruised hip, a broken rear axle and bent wheel. The driver did not stop or even put on their brake lights. We, as cyclist, should be able to provide video evidence of negligent driving and expect charges to be laid. In a perfect world that is

Before the white pickup went by there is definite sound of car horn, so something prior may have been occurring. Might have just been the driver venting his frustration that they taking up too much road space.

I mean, there's stupid and careless cycling/driving... and then there's actually trying to kill someone.

Amazingly cyclist was very lucky to be not badly injured or maimed. Being the US I expect he will try and sue the arse off him, I would also.

It's all over the Internet. Setting aside the cowardly act by the driver. Some real confusion amongst the yanks as to the law and procedure. Those that aren't shouting that they woukd.love to do the same are saying that the cyclists should be single file and deserved it.

According to the female TV presenter on one of the news report vids, the law allows cyclists to ride two abreast on that road. It's a designated cycle route with warning signs for motorists.

Fortunately its never happened to me but many years ago I was a witness to something similar. I was working away staying in an hotel near Fareham and went for a stroll in the early evening. The road was traffic calmed and a cyclist was going uphill (and so relatively slowly) a car driver behind could not overtake due to a combination of the oncoming traffic and the traffic calming installations. The cyclist was towards the side of the road as far as practically possible. The driver after a few seconds stuck behind the bike began revving his engine and sounding his horn, then, when there was a gap in the oncoming traffic overtook swinging back in way too early and knocking the poor fellow off his bike practically at my feet. The driver did not slow down or stop.

Luckily he was not badly hurt but I had managed to make a mental note of the registration and wrote it down for him with my contact details if he wanted to pursue a complaint.

A week or so later I had a call from the local police to confirm I was happy to appear as a witness if required. I didn't hear any further after this so I assume the driver acknowledged guilt or the prosecution didn't proceed.....

AFAICS. Americans seem to have an inflexible mindset for these sort of things. they don't seem to be able to adapt to local changes to their way of doing things. I see this a lot on Endless-sphere, where they're generally very inflexible when it comes to new things and will just spout out their winning formula, regardless of any requirements that the OP lays down.


This sort of reminds me of an episode years ago, when I had to go to German lessons with an American. The teacher explained that there were many words for "the" in German, so we would start with der, die and das. "Nah" says my American colleague. "That's too complicated, and there's no need for more than one word. I'll just use der. They'll know what I mean".

I wish i could have recorded those German lessons. they were just about the funniest thing that happened to me in my whole life. sometimes, my English colleague came too, and we had to take it in turns to leave the room, run up the corridor and let all the laughter out. One time, I'd just taken a big sip of coffee, while it was the American's turn to answer, but his answer was so funny, that i couldn't help but spit my coffee all over the table. It was really embarrassing, but I just couldn't help it.
