They cut the chain.

That kind of makes their claim quite a nonsense...

'...a more hardened surface than round links making sawing and cutting virtually impossible'

looked at a you tube video (how secure is your bicycle lock) it took about 90seconds with angle grinder to cut through decent locks but this was in a studio rather than outside I believe.
watched bbc1 thief trackers where they put a tracker on a bike,secured to railings with a decent chain and lock, was wrenched from railings by a fat schoolboy in 10seconds, not sure if lock had already been tampered with though.

I went into Santander Aviva are there insurance underwriters

Any chain/lock will be defeated with a cordless angle grinder. Not much we can do about that, sadly.

Ive just switched my house insurance to Bradford & Bingley to cover my ebike.

Initially they said they don't cover bikes with motors, but when I explained details of the motor and it being pedal assist she went away to discuss it with someone and came back saying they would provide cover.
