I'm not insured but a £30 British cycleing membership gets me liability cover aswell as 10% at Halfords & other discounts

I would recommend eta insurance for my needs. There's no ridiculous requirements for how the bike is locked up at home e.g. I can use a normal padlock on my shed. The other benefit is that as I lock my bike up at a train station the definition of an immovable object changes so it doesn't matter that the bike bars aren't concreted into the floor and are only bolted in. This is surprisingly common and wouldn't be covered by most insurances as an immovable object. Lastly the battery is covered specifically. I had to move from cycleguard when I realised I wasn't covered for the above.

There was a mistake in my previous post, the insurance company sent me my new contract:

The 40 € was for the new bike so in total both bikes cost 80 € / year to insure (4574 € maximum value), so 6.67 € a month.

My home insurance provider won't cover an ebike. They will though give me a pro rata refund if I want to cancel, less a £25 admin fee!!

Cycleguard quote for my ebike only is £160/year.

Think I need to switch my home policy to one that will cover my ebike, having it on a house insurance policy does seem much much cheaper than something like Cycleguard.

I have home insurance/contents with swintons renewal premium was just over£200 including £20 for cover of unpowered bicycle, but I wanted to cover my ebike so dropped the the £20 cover for unpowered, with ebike cover £210 for £1200 value did not seem to be too bothered about gold secure locks .
phoned rias household cover £159 but they do not insure ebikes.
cycleguard was £120 for ebike up to £1700.

a mate has 2 ik bikes and £1700 ebike he insured with Santander under contents I believe and said premium was very reasonable (do not know exact price)

I was very specific in asking that ebike was covered for theft when away from home have not received insurance scedual at the mo, only reinsured Thursday my insurance will however run from FRIDAY 13TH

the only true test of an insurance policy is when you actually make a claim. Bradford and Bingley will insure e bikes up to £5000 in with their home and contents policy.
I think the price you have been quoted is very good, but, generally speaking, the cheapest insurance quote is not necessarily the best option, after all, if you lose your pride and joy you want to be sure you will get paid..The value of my bikes exceed this £5000 limit so I now have to use a specialist insurer which costs £200 per year for two bike with a replacement value of £7000, or not bother and take the risk myself.

I have been insured by them since 1977 and they have taken good care of me so far. The premium goes up a lot when moving above the amount currently insured, that next value step up being 7500€.

Im just doing an online quote with Bradford & Bingley. In their 'specified bicycles over £350' section it states...

This should include all bicycles which are not motorised

So have I missed something?

Unless things have changed since I was with them.. I rang up and they told me that as long as it didn't have a throttle and would only move when being peddled it was still classed as an assisted bicycle. But as I said things may have changed..

Just what they told me. Underwriters said if it would drive without pedalling then they would class it as a motorbike, if it has to be pedalled to generate assistance then its classed as a pedal cycle.

It cost £45 including a £25 admin fee.
It was stolen three weeks ago and I was paid out £3000 within 10 days.
Gold locks are not much deterrent.

I live in Sheffield and there are a LOT of cycle thefts in the city centre, mostly students bikes that aren't very well secured. I work in the city centre but I can park my bike in the office. I have also fitted an Abus Granite folding lock to my Cube reaction Race ebike.

They cut the chain.
I intended to put the Abus lock around a fork stantion + wheel + something solid but it is a bit short. Still, with the disk lock on and everything adding up to about 25kg they are not going to make a quick getaway carrying it.
