Why noise cancelling isn't good?

Noise cancelling is great, if you want to cancel noise, but in traffic you may need to hear the lorry coming up behind you, so total cancellation could be dangerous.. the use of good ear buds allows a little of the ambient noise get through.
There is another problem with even noise cancelling ear buds on bikes, . Wind noise around the ears , probably due to turbulent air flow is not cancelled. I have

No noise cancelling headset ever completely cancel the sound anyway. You'll always hear traffic noise

No noise cancelling headset ever completely cancel the sound anyway. You'll always hear traffic noise

. Not really, the NW750 earphones supplied by Sony for the NWA 25 music player ,and with a moderate volume ,drown out everything, surprisingly the same phones with the later NWA35 , are not as effective

.. but 2000 times better??!. They need to be better in definable measurements. It is a perfectly valid claim for you to say that you prefer them , but that's not the same as better...

A thumbs up for aftershockz here. Not tried the latest model the Aeropex but I have the previous one trekz air and can highly recommend. Big improvement in sound quality over previous models and the ability to answer the phone easily and hear turn by turn instructions with google maps. Takes the boredom out of daily commutes for me and as long as you don’t play them too loud you are still aware of traffic around you. The only time I find wind noise to be a problem is when using them to answer the phone sometimes but busy traffic is worse. For music on the move they’re perfect for me first thing I grab before going out for a ride.

Two years after my post, technology has improved and I recently bought this Livall helmet.

The sound is average, and so is the power. I find that above 30 km/h the wind noise is too loud and drowns most of the music.
However, the fact that the speakers are above the user's ears and don't cover them is good.
The biggest risk with headphones on a bike is:
- not hearing traffic and dangers
- a deterioration of your sense of balance

These really don't create any danger. The helmet is comfortable and airy.

And music on my daily commute is certainly a comfort on the long stretches.

Maybe try to reduce the wind noise with something like these.

hi Anthony I’m not sure if you realise aftershockz are boneconducting headphones they fit in front of your ears not in your ears. Also wind noise is not a problem when listening to music .it simply does not occur. It only becomes a problem sometimes when answering the phone because the little microphones pick up wind noise

I own a pair of Aftershokz Bluez 2 bone conduction headphones, but they suffer the same issue you describe. Once riding at 20mph+, they are drowned out by wind noise. Also, the sound quality is pretty poor and they're only really suitable for voice audio IMO.

I also own a Minirig speaker/subwoofer combo (link below). The sound quality is fantastic and it can play LOUD when required. I haven't yet tried it on the bike, but hope to in the coming week, so I'll let you know my findings when I do.

Another shout for minirig. I had a bose bt speaker, it dropped onto the charging USB and broke the socket, couldn't get it fixed. Minirig was about the same price, better battery life, any problems they repair it. They've just made a new padded case for the speakers, with a net front. Not tried it yet but it would easily clip onto the handlebars.
