next thing, you will be looking for legislation for pedestrians to walk one in front of the other instead of side by side.......What happened to romance!:p

Caveman style romance would make a helmet advisable for the front one!

Only in the event of a head injury, not a blanket application of blame for the accident as you said but only in respect of that kind of injury liability.
For helmet yes but for say high vis vest and I did not see him etc same would apply. All of which as you say could effect amount of any damages paid out and also it does have same effect when it comes to court case (here I'm speaking from personal experience).

So while your original point is valid and I fully agree unfortunately the reality is that at least in some cases/circumstances it might as well be a rule.

No mention of keeping to the left in those Luke, just asking for tolerance and care basically.

It's a pity though that it starts with such nonsense as including rules on the wearing of cycle helmets and certain article of clothing, There are no such rules and never have been, and this sort of thing calls into question the credibility of the whole entry.

Two good things to remember when reading the Highway code:-

1: Sections or sentances starting with should are advisory. If you don't adhere to the advice you won't face criminal proceedings but you could be held accountable in a civil court or have blame attributed.

2: Sections or sentances starting with must are compulsory, you could face criminal proceedings for not adhering to the rule(s). The must statements will be followed by something like "Law RVLR regs nn" which details the relevant legislation that allows these criminal proceedings to be intiated.

In Denmark we sometimes have to share our cycle lanes with pedestrians and low powered mopeds.

If I am approaching pedestrians from the rear I give a polite "Ding" on my bell a long way back and then a repeater if I can see they have not heard me. I often slow down and thank them. In 10 years I have never had a problem.

Low powered scooters are another thing entirely. They seem to sneak up on you and then whizz past leaving almost no room. It is not the cyclist in me that gets annoyed it is the motorcyclist.

I have spoken to quite a few of these riders and told them a polite beep as a warning would help. I have never had a hard time for explaining this and it appears that they had never thought of it.

Sounds terrible Eddie, glad I no longer live in Streatham! :)

Suicide rates per 100,000 persons:

Male: Spain 11.9 ; UK 10.9

Female: Spain 3.4 ; UK 3.0

All: Spain 7.6 ; UK 6.9

Dunno what it is for Streatham.

Yes, North and Central Croydon are terrible for cycling, but in the South here it's quite pleasant. I'm afraid much of Shirley isn't too good though, it's very much a car mad area with plenty of boy racers.
