Might an industrial 1/2" pitch chain provide a stronger solution? Not sure if it would mesh with the sprocket teeth correctly but if it did it would be a lot stronger. You could pop into a local supplier (I use thelocal branch of Eriks) and try it for fit to avoid expense of buying it if it doesn't fit. This kind of thing:

Buy Chains, Links & Accessories British std chain,080-1 12.7mm pitch Witra CW081-1 online from RS for next day delivery.
What's the betting that's a bike chain repackaged and given a higher price. :)

Re: my earlier post on chain dimensions. JamesC has helpfully advised me that at least some manufacturers state the internal roller width of 9 and 10 speed chains is 11/128" rather than 3/32" As James points out, this has caused some problems with some Panasonic unit bikes when sprockets for 3/32" have been used, the 0.2 mm sprocket width difference being important with critical sprocket applications.

My knowledge on these dimensions is from quite some while ago and it seems this change of internal widths stated for the 9 and 10 speed chains has passed me by unnoticed.

Can understand your suspicions but this type of chain is much more substantial, I have used them on machines in the factory where I work
