January 3, 200818 yr it seems that bikes using panasonic drive through motors are usually mated with hub gears, are deraileur gears not really a suitable option with this system.
January 3, 200818 yr Hub gears are popular in northern (ie : germanic) Europe. For commuters in urban area, it's a must. But there is no problem with panasonic motor and derailleur gears. Flyer (Biketech) has models with derailleur gears to cut cost (Deore/Nexave in a budget model), or to be used in heavy duty off-road (XT in an expensive moutain bike). January 4, 200818 yr Yes, and some owners have converted these to use derailleurs. One slight objection is that the trailing jockey sprocket shortens the path from the chainwheel are to the rear cassette, so lateral drag could affect the rear mechanism on an eight or nine sprocket cassette. Some owners have used the Xtracycle rear extension with derailleurs successfully on the Lafree bikes, which substantially lengthens the chain run.
