How to ship e-bike lithium batteries within the UK?

Not at all, that is absolutely possible FUL. No carrier is going to check out the certification prior to sending. The onus to get it right is on the sender. One could equally pack 3kg of Semtex in the battery box, the responsibility for the contents of the carton is the sender's. If the battery caused damage and was then proven to be non certified, the sender would be in big trouble, even if he had used the correct carton.

Isn't that ever so slightly more more dangerous than lithium Ion cells:eek:.....or is this a new power source?
Frankly, I think you could lose a lot of customers:p

Hi Fordulike,

All carriers already have or are in the process of clamping down on the transport of lithium batteries esp. those over 100Wh so all electric bike batteries.

I took a battery to my local Post Office on Friday who refused to take it, even after explanations re UN38.3 etc. I took it to the main PO in Sevenoaks. I declared it was Lithium Ion battery and should be dealt with as Class 9 Dangerous Goods. They looked at the packaging to check the correct Class 9 diamond was printed on the box, stuck a label onto the box to say what to do if the packaging was damaged, charged me about £12.00 and that was it, no fuss and no more expensive than sending any other parcel.

As long as the battery and packaging is certified to UN 38.3. There should be no difference sending a battery overland as any other 3kg package.

I'm reviving this thread because I have a battery which will need to go back to the dealer and he tells me that it isn't possible to ship batteries anymore unless they are attached to the bike. But the post above that I'm quoting seems to say that you could as of last year, as long as you declared it and put the correct sticker on it.

So is that still correct? Because a search of shippers prohibited goods lists shows that if it's over 100 wh none would accept it. I couldn't find anything about declaring it as class 9 dangerous goods either.

I can do without an all day return trip to take it back so is there any way they can still be sent legally? I could just send it without declaring it of course but that would invalidate any insurance claim if it was lost, as well as leaving me potentially liable to criminal action in the unlikely event of the battery causing a fire.

The dealer won't send them out now at all and says that the shippers tightened up recently. But another dealer did send me a replacement battery a few months ago. So how can you send a battery legally now?

Trex beat me to it, I received bbs 01 and battery from woosh in August. Carrier was one of the above can't remember which though.

Yes I had one sent from Woosh in the summer too, and sent the old non working one back in the same packaging. But this dealer is saying that they can't send them out at all. I'll look at the links.

I need to send the battery from a Woosh Big Bear back to Woosh. They have suggested InterlinkDirect but, looking online, the cost is going to be over £20 (to include enough insurance to cover the value of the battery). I'd like to shop around. Does anyone know of other companies that will post/deliver a lithium battery for an electric bike?

If you are still having problems, Tuffnells will collect for you. The battery does need to be in the correct packaging though. We have the correct cartons available with DG 9 stickers. If you are desparate we can send you one.

The cost would be around £20 whoever you use. The battery is classed as Dangerous Goods if not connected to a bike.

Many thanks. I will explore the Tuffnells option. I have got a label (see attached) which I understood would be the correct one to put on the packaging. The "correct carton" looks like a useful option. Could you send me information re the charge etc for getting one of those to me please? Looks like I would need to send back both the battery and the charger though - to cover all eventualities for where the fault may lie. (Whole thing is further complicated by the fact that its not my battery but a friends - who doesn't have internet! - so am currently trying to sort things out on his behalf)

You would probably be OK as long as you declared what was in the package Soundwave. As we are in the industry we would not risk the possibilities of something going wrong. We should after all know better.

I am surprised though that the Bosch battery carton was not properly marked?

Of course it's the responsibility of the individual dealer to either stay within guide lines or not. We would never send a battery out packed in that way. The risk is not yours though it is always the senders. There is an exception if you are importing from outside Europe, then the package becomes the importer's responsibility as soon as it gets within European air or sea boundaries.
