e-bike, is this the right place to ask
Postby belgiangoth » 29 May 2018, 9:11pm

My Mother-in-law thinks she needs an electric assist, so it's worth spending the cash to get her the independence and mobility. I was thinking some sort of electric assist folder, possibly with a BB motor as opposed to on the wheel (not that she will change punctures, but so that someone else/I can without being put off by the electrickery). What's good and what's to be avoided?
If I had a baby elephant I would let it sleep in the garage in place of the car. If I had either a garage or a car. (I miss sigs about baby elephants)

Unless you are going to spend upwards of about £2,000 I would avoid an electric folder - there are some real rubbish ones around at prices from about £300 - very heavy, poor manufacture and wheel motors.

... and for an upright much below the £1,000 price point is not worth considering.

There is an electric bike forum called Pedelecs (although the discussion is frequently of the rant variety ... ranging to puerile - in my view - just the odd useful item)

Have a look at EBCO - they sell a few different brands of reasonable quality machines (I sell a few in the shop as well as the Roux ebike)

Rob

Your not wrong there with the pedelec forum
Theres more moaning and general abuse than anything else unless your into politics that does seem to be its main interest which I find strange for an ebike forum
There not all Pratt’s in there but the majority seems to be the norm.

there's regularly a political angle to some threads like this one:
EBMA files an anti dumping complaint on chinese e-bikes. It has clocked up 370 posts and 19 pages.
The full acting throttle had also lots of posts, mostly political.
It's the variety of subjects that makes this forum an interesting place.

I am not sure I understand what he means.

Well that doesn't say much for the perceptions and judgement of the membership of Cycling UK.

Pedelecs has 20 e-biking forums and just 1 off-subject one

Those 20 e-biking forums have 355,667 contributions on the subject.

The Charging Post has 56,402 contributions on every subject under the sun, including many still about e-biking and cycling.

Seems to me this is once again Roadies venting their spleen against e-bikes.

I got banned from the political section on cyclechat, for 3 months, for daring to suggest that both sides should compromise in what they think Brexit should achieve, in the Brexit thread, they said that was trolling, and I was the only one banned despite some personal insults thrown at me, that I ignored, so I asked to be deleted from the forum, not that it wouldn’t be easy enough to rejoin under a different name and email address, but I don’t think you should worry about what others say or post on different forums.

I recently received a lifetime ban from the UK Cycling Forum. Apparently, and I quote. "the forum does not allow self publicist" Apparently my photos and writing in the mtb section, was too orchestrated. I just found it funny.
Short, long and permanent bans are routine on other forums I frequent. Think it's healthy for everyone. An enforced break for miscreant, a message to others and a calming influence generally. It's no big deal but I, ve never known anyone banned on here. Myself, Tom, Tilllson, OG, Tommie and probably others would have had more gardening time quite often on other Forums.
Yes, we shouldn't take comments seriously but likewise when action is taken its not serious either but sets a standard we shouldn't drop below. The Brexit forum falls well short too often but since leavers have left... problem solved, but that certainly isn't free speech... Is it?
Banning poor behaviour actually promotes free speech. Not the reverse as some claim.

In Pedelecs there has been many warnings issued, some temporary bans and even a number of members permanently banned. Two of those permanently banned had previously been subject to a temporary ban and warnings.

One of them was an important and valuable member for the information and experience he brought to the forum. Many members appealed against his ban and expressed their unhappiness with it, I was a friend of his and he lived near me, but Admin were resolute and would not cancel the ban.

So there are standards firmly applied where absolutely necessary, but exercised with tolerance that many benefit from, including you as you've acknowledged in your post.

At what level the standard is set is likely to be different for every member, but the site is owned and run by the administrators and it's their decision. In return for them providing this very useful free facility, I feel it my duty to respect that.

You do and always have respected decent standards in your posts. I, m not sure what previous posters did to receive a ban, the standards in Brexit have been, at times, low to say the least. Behaviour to get a ban must be pretty bad. Must have been treason or murder perhaps.

That member on Cycling UK with the low opinion of this Pedelecs forum - robgul - has posted here too. His very first post on this forum might have helped form his opinion...

From his post it seems he sells Roux e-bikes, and d8veh gave a usefully full and frank opinion on those here!

Yes, that certainly might have coloured his opinion, I noticed he didn't give a "Like" to d8veh's assessment. :D

Where does it show he SELLS Roux e-bikes ??
to be fair, he does not push e-bikes and what he says is mostly justifiable.

I did notice a few of your postings over there Eddie and find it strange to hear you are banned. They obviously don't know a good reviewer when they see one.

They do have an e-bike section with a few promoters trying to gee them up a bit, but it does appear they haven't the will to move with a new trend. Mostly it is a roadie forum with what seems the typical bust a blood vessel mentality amongst some of them.
I quite like the bent/ trike section which I find quite interesting.

That's what happens when the photo and writing quality are too good. Brings out all the inferiority complexes. :)

The funny part was that the ban wasn't wasn't even pedelec related, although I had made my feelings clear in respect of current UK pedelec law. The ban was actually because of the photo shown below and written content about my pedal mtb.

Content of previous posts and thread titles within both the pedelec section and mountain bike section had also been either altered or removed altogether. None of which I passed comment or reaction towards.

In respect of the photo below, I had actively been trying to boost the mountain bike section, as comment had been passed that it was under used and floundering. Hardly a surprise I guess. o_O:D
