Hi

I did a search on the forums but couldn't find a detailed answer. I would like to upgrade the battery on my Hopper city SE from the 5ah to the
24V15Ah Li-Ion Little Frog EBike Battery Pack

from bmsbattery.com

Is it a straight forward replacement or do I need to change any sensors? I would like everything to be working exactly the same as the original bike, just with longer range. Will this affect the assist settings? Thanks

Hi Triplelogs, welcome to the forum.

No change to the system apart from longer charge times, just plug in the new one and enjoy the new range and sell the base and charger on ebay and get some money back to make the purchase even cheaper:)

Your assist speeds will not change they will only be maintained for longer periods of time before they reduce due to the effect of battery voltage dropping near exhaustion until cut off limit is reached - determined by the controller voltage limiting levels.

Hi Shemozzle

Thanks for the reply. So the one i mentioned above has two options:

200V - 264V
90V - 132V

Do you know which one I would require? And what kind of range would I be looking at getting from my City Hopper SE that currently has the 5ah battery? Thanks again

It refers to the ac mains voltage of the charger - I assume you need one for UK mains voltage of 240v ac - so the first one 200V - 264V.

Range would be theoretically 3x what you already have.

Great, thanks Shemozzle. I will see what the range is like when I receive the bike (hopefully tomorrow) and then buy the following item if required:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Enerpower-24V-Battery-16-75-Ah-Pedelec-Bike-battery-Electric-Pedal-Frog-/262023719141?hash=item3d01d4a8e5

Finally, are there any other upgrades I can make to the bike? I can see that it's possible to add a throttle function which I will definitely consider, but is there anything else I can upgrade / change which will improve the bike?

Thanks

I would ride the bike first for a while and add any upgrades you feel you need later.

The battery link you provided looks ok but like the BMS one it appears to sell the yellow anodized base which does not have a reinforcing plate welded on it to strengthen the mounting bracket.

With the extra weight of the new battery I would check your existing base is of the strengthened variety, if not a replacement can be purchased from Panda bikes.

I started my e-biking life with a Hopper Shopper. Great little bike for the money. I also wanted to go further and with more power for hills so looked into the option of getting a more powerful battery. I got some very useful advice on here which may (or may not) be relevant/useful to you. Anyway, my IT skills permitting(!), the following are links to the two discussions/posts that I am aware of.

PS: If its just a matter of being able to further (rather than more power uphills) one option would be to get another battery of the same specs. It worked for me because we were so impressed with the Hopper Shopper (at the price) that my wife bought one too. So......if cycling on my own I just put the spare battery in a rack bag and changed batteries halfway. If the potential problems with controllers etc etc (see linked posts in my previous reply) seem a bit daunting, a second battery (and second bike?) might be an option.
