Hello all,
As the nights are drawing ever closer and generally the weather is becoming worse I thought I'd invest in some safer clothing.

Now normally I wear a tshirt with some muddy fox MTB shorts and gloves etc.

But as the nights are drawing in I brought a night vision jacket and some waterproof over trousers. However my normal shorts we're just to bulky.

So thought I'd pop to the chav ridden sports direct to see the cycling gear.
Anyway I ended up coming away with a floor pump for a fiver and some Lycra full length tights with padding.

Now with just the Lycra on I look like a fairy. Intact the girl friend says I look like an elf prancing about. Now I do look funny. But I wear the over trousers out as to not scare anyone.

But the Lycra tights are about the most comfortable thing on a bike over worn. There hideously comfy. Intact I'm wearing them now writing this on my phone before I go to work.

I think I'm coming out.....

I can see a leg shaving session coming on. I shaved my legs once (I was a very keen roadie at the time) and told a married friend at work, it was then that I realised he was the one who might need to come out

If you are over 25, do not under any circumstances wear Lycra. It looks ridiculous, is very unpleasant for third party observers and will frighten children.

I think the only exception to this is if you are over 25, you have to stick thin, been a (very) keen cyclist all your life and have that very competitive determined gleam in your eye, only then and only then if you really have to is it OK

Sorry but joking apart, Lycra is so comfortable and so liberating it is foolish to ignore the technology

I know I look like peter pan in them. I weight 80 kilo (12.5 stone ish) but have a small belly.
But its the muffin tops that flow out. Which to be fair the night vision jacket would hide.

But I couldnt take the ripping from work. I'm already a one off in the fact i cycle to work. Giving them the ammo of me in tights would clarify that I'm a bender.

Not to mention scare the rest of the buying office (90% all women) I dont think my boss Hannah would approve. I've already threatened her to come in with my shorts ;-)

Hello Scotty: How are you? My name is Jim. I'm new to the site. I came across your posting on the topic of lycra shorts, liked what I read, and just HAD to comment on it! I agree with 1 million%!!!!!!! When I wear my lycra, I look like a fairy, too. In fact, I "feel" like one, too. No matter how many different lycra shorts (I have different colors) I put on or how many outfits/pieces I throw together with it, I can NEVER "feel" manly. Anyway, I just wanted to send this message to let know that you're not the only one that feels the same way about wearing lycra. Thank you for allowing to send you this message. Please feel free to reply back. I'd appreciate the feedback, whether it's positive OR negative. Take care Scotty.

I am 55 and not aerodynamically friendly and ride an Alpino 906 for recreational riding - usually around 50 miles a time - and use Gore Bike Wear. Lightweight, comfy, breathable. There is no doubt that good gear just makes the journey so much nicer.

I have just discovered the joys of army surplus. I have just taken delivery of a brand new pair of dark blue RAF Gore Tex trousers - elasticated waist, draw string and zipped bottoms, all for the princley sum of.......

£14.80!

Yes - £14.80 for brand new Gore tex trousers! :D

New RAF Goretex Wet Weather Trousers Size L90 W94 S110 | eBay

I've had a really good inspection of them and I own a Gore Bike Wear jacket and it's easily up there with the quality -proper taped seams, robust zips, reinforcing gussets where appropriate - in fact, I wouldn't be suprised if they made these.

Search for "Army Gore Tex" on ebay of Goolge and see what's out there. I might plump for one of these for those long night commutes.

Also got these as I suffer watering eyes when riding, and I'm looking a bit silly using my snowboard goggles :) Look at the rrp!

Now I wonder who wrote this?
Usual suspects, Eddio, Indalo, but maybe Lynda?, Flecc?

Question about the Goretex.
Just how waterproof is it?
I use coated nylon for sailing, it is hot and non permeable and you sweat a lot. Not a bad thing when its freezing on the water.
So, if you sit in a puddle of water in goretex, will it leak?

Just do it! ;) I am 60 and have been wearing lycra since it first became available. When I am out on the bike I do see a lot of crying children and pedestrians covering their faces. Also I seem to see a lot of car accidents, but hey ho. I used to get wolf whistles and comments from ladies about the size of my lunch box :), but they have obviously got used to me, after all these years, because this has now stopped :(

However the comfort and less wind resistance makes it all worth while.

Goretex is 100% waterproof and doesn't rely on a special coating like other materials like isotex that wear off over time - often a very short time when cycling. Goretex items normally do have a waterproof coating though but that's to prevent "wet out" that harms breathability. "Wet out" is where the surface becomes saturated with water instead of it beading off - this "wet out" then prevents the fabric from breathing. The waterprrof coating doesn't have anything to do with how waterproof goretex is, just it's beathability when it raining.

Gore Bike wear (it's a brand of it's own while Gore Tex is a product that is used by many manufacturers) is really great stuff, probably the best, but certainly not cheap. I've got a superlight windstopper from them, only a few gramms, fits into the backpocket of a jersey, and is extremely breathable. In cold weather I do all my workouts with it.... Riding on a roadbike I have no scruples wearing lycra but stick to black, white or grey...
