Certainly important to get them the right way round, but the threads are different (anticlockwise for left pedal). If you put them on the wrong way round you'd either hardly screw them in at all and they'd fall off almost immediately, or you'd strip the thread trying to screw then in further. In the second case you might have to replace the cranks and/or pedals.
Yes @sjpt of course you're totally right. I just heard "I put the pedals in wrong" which is what happens when blokes are talking b8ll8cks after the 5th or so pint, and I likely made an assumption. But as you point out, you can't reverse the pedals because of the thread. He did strip the thread on both pedal and crank-arm, crashed the bike, and has since lost all interest in e-bikes and sold the bike back to the shop.
