Help Please!

Hi, my elderly father has been enjoying his second-hand Raleigh Stow-e-Way (Raleigh Evo) with a TranzX system, for a few months, but recently the motor has been dropping out momentarily at inconvenient (dangerous) times, particularly under stress.

When this happens he hears what he describes as a mechanical "graunch" noise from the back.

The battery is locked down properly, it's an intermittent fault so it doesn't show up on the diagnostic tests

He doesn't want to replace it, but cutting out as he pulls into traffic is dangerous and he's quite old. Any ideas where to go for help please?

That's mainly caused by a bad connection between the controller and motor.
The motor connector must be inserted ALL THE WAY TO THE MARKED LINE, not just in tight. Please don't come back and say that the connector is in. It's either to the line or not. That's what's important.
If that doesn't fix it, check the connector/s at the controller end.
If that's not it, check that the motor cable isn't damaged, especially where it comes out of the axle.

Yes the graunching riders who may think it is mechnical, is actually poor electrical phase contact or phase position out of sync.

Replying to this thread although it’s a few months old as I own the same bike and have had this issue too. Took it to a mechanic who said they ran the diagnostics and couldn’t find any fault, so they recommended getting a whole new motor for nearly £500. I thought this was a bit ludicrous as the motor clearly was still functioning.

After some more online searching, I found a tip that it might be related to a dirty cadence sensor. I cleaned the sensor magnets very carefully and have found that the issue has almost entirely disappeared now. Just thought that this is worth sharing in case you or anyone else searching this topic finds it useful!

...so they recommended getting a whole new motor for nearly £500.
A new Tranzx 15 motor for the Stow-e-way is typically £200+duties (i.e. not £500). Thank goodness you don't need one.
