Help please with Kalkhoff Agattu transmission

I urgently need to order a new chain for The Lady Wife's Panasonic-motored Agattu but I'm not in a position at present to actually check the one that's on her bike. I'm fairly sure that it's 122 links including the connecting link, but am I right that it's a 3/32" x 1/2" chain?

Is the convention that the number of links you order includes the link or not, and if I'm right that it's 3/32" x 1/2", anybody know where I can get one the right length online?

Right. I know I can get 114 link chains and I have a chain splitter, so for the time being I'm not too concerned about the chain per se. What I'm concerned about now is the fact that it looks like the whole drive train is three parts cream crackered, so the questions now are ...

1. What are my chances of getting a new set of sprockets (motor, chainwheel and rear) for a 2011-year Panasonic-engined Agattu?

2. What's that likely to cost me?

3. And how much fun is it to change all three? I have the tools and the mechanical aptitude to do it (unless any dedicated kit is required), but I'd want to see an exploded diagram or suchlike to give me a clue as to what I'd be getting into.

Very good chance, the chainwheels are available online from Germany according to another member. In 2008 the Agattu chainwheel was 41 tooth so count your 2011 one to check.

The motor sprocket is a 9 tooth and should also be online from Germany.

If yours is a hub gear bike the sprocket is a 22 tooth Shimano Nexus one from any cycle dealer. The Sturmey and SRAM ones also fit.

3. And how much fun is it to change all three? I have the tools and the mechanical aptitude to do it (unless any dedicated kit is required), but I'd want to see an exploded diagram or suchlike to give me a clue as to what I'd be getting into.

The chainring is also held on with a circlip.

All parts available on ebay for instance, plus cheap toolkit with a tool to cut off links if needed, removing cassettes, and other useful bits and pices!
The only place that you may make an error (I did once), is ordering the wrong type of cassette, as there are at least two different systems.
Possibly more that 2.... Someone else here will know for certain!

The Agattu doesn't have a cassette, so that's not a problem

Here's the 9 tooth motor sprocket from Wiggle in the UK, a couple of pounds cheaper than Amazon. Make sure you select 9 tooth.

Also from Wiggle the Nexus Hub gear 22 tooth sprocket, again make sure you select 22 tooth but they only have one left at present. Plenty elsewhere though.

The Agattu doesn't have a cassette, so that's not a problem

Here are chains and removable links, dozens of them, with one single search using "Bike Chain" for searching! I found on ebay:-

Which one is for your bike just needs careful measurement, and a search. Counting the number of links is quite normal. Buying one a bit longer, removing the unwanted links with a special (cheap) tool is very easy, then adding a removable link.

I forgot to mention earlier, best not buy the chain until you have all three sprockets to be certain about their width. Hub gears normally use 1/8" sprockets but since mid drive motors have beens supplied for both hub gears and derailleurs nothing is certain. Panasonic used to supply with 1/8" sprockets since their early motors were only used with hub gears, but latterly nearly everything is derailleur so now mostly 3/32".

Fortunately 1/8" chain runs ok on 3/32" sprockets and many e-bikes have been supplied like this. So if you end up with a sprocket mix or want to buy the chain in advance, just buy 1/8" chain.

That's very good to know, flecc. Thank you. I'm fairly sure i have a couple of new 1/8" chains lurking in the shed somewhere. They won't be e-bike chains, but in view of the possibility that we'll be flogging this bike soon, that's not really much of a concern.

Incidentally, what exactly is (supposed to be) the difference 'twixt a bike chain and an e-bike chain? I'm a bit cynical about much of this stuff now that I've noticed there's such a thing as e-bike chain oil ...
