Hi

I'm about to sell my car and I looking at getting a folding electric bike to commute to work I won't be doing long journeys on it but I will need to hop on and off the metro a few times a day.

I have found 2 bikes in my price range and wonder which one you recommend or have any other suggestions

Oxygen snake
Oxygen Snake: world's smallest folding electric bike

A.S Bikes Electrobike
ElectroBike - Mk2 & Mk3

Any help is much appreciated

Welcome to the forum.

Can't find weight for the first one. The second one weighs 21kgs incl battery so if you want it to be truly portable (carry it any distance) that is a big no no.

My Brompton (36v both of those are 24v) weighs 13kgs plus 2kgs for the bag with battery. For me that would be about the limit in terms of jumping off and on buses and trains.

With smaller wheels it begins to get very uncomfortable riding anything with 16" or less if it has no suspension. 12" or 14" would again be a no no for more than a couple of miles.

PS with any folding bike I would highly recommend a test ride first as some of them are terrible to ride!

PPS Just noticed the second one has 16" with front suspension hence the weight. First has 20" wheels but no suspension. As I said a test ride is essential.

Regards

Jerry

Tessker....we (KudosCycles) have a new folder out early May,weight 18 kgs, name Secret, the bike was designed to compromise between power, weight and range....the power was restricted to 220watts,which is more than enough for these small folders, the weight of 18kgs was achieved using a special 36v x 8Ah LiMno4 battery,in frame, to give a decent range of 20-25 miles. It is possible to increase the range but at the expense of increased weight and lower power. The bike comes with an a wheeled transport bag.I did experiment taking these bikes on a train and without the bag it's really difficult and certainly not realistic on a daily commute. Our price of £725.00 may be more than you want to spend but at least the foregoing gives you some points to think about. For me anything less than 20" wheels is uncomfortable to ride for any distance

Thanks for the reply Jerry

You have given me some food for thought.

I really do like the brompton bikes, can you get them as an e-bike or do you need to convert them with a kit, i wouldnt know where to start, what type of price would I be looking at for a brompton e-bike.

Dave, I've had a look at the bike you suggested and it seems right for what I need it for. I havent got a set price, im just looking for teh most bang for my buck.

How is the wheeled transport bag carried whilst riding the bike?

Thanks guys, you have been a great help

The bag is big, regret it cannot be carried whilst using the bike. I did try to design that as well but it just is not possible. The bag is more about storage and moving the bike inside the bag.

Hi Tess
Where are you?
If you are within reach of South Manchester or Buxton in Derbyshire you'd be very welcome to have a close look at our Urban folder: 20", 250 Watts, 36 Volts, 10AH Lithium Ion, with throttle and pedal assist (3 Levels).

As a Pedelec member you'd qualify for a discount too :)

We have other retailers dotted around the country also and I'd appreciate hearing your feedback after a demo ride.

Good luck with your search.

Im in the north east of england and there doesnt seem to be much in the way of shops that stock folding electric bikes. I think im going to have to buy without trying any out and hope I make the right decision.

Bob, that is a nice bike. What type of discount could you do? How big is the bike when it is folded?

If you would rather contact me directly, let me know.

Thanks

Hi Tess
When folded the bike can easily fit inside 90 X 50 X 70 cm.

If you enter our discount code at the checkout you'll get an extra £25 off.

If you contact me directly via the link below I can explain more.
