Helmets in Aldi

I found snowboarding helmets in Aldi today for £19.99. I bought one because:
  • They don't let wasps in in the summer.
  • They're more stylish than a bike helmet.
  • They have pieces that cover your ears so that they don't get cold in the winter.
  • The ear covers mean that I don't get wind-noise which stops me from hearing my radio, 2-way radio or tmobile phone when I have earphones in.
I guess you can buy them from lots of shops. I can't find a link to the Aldi one, but they look like this:

That's good value that is.

I have not previously worn a cycling helmet, but I always said that I would wear one if I found one that was fit for purpose. So I decided to have a look in Aldi`s. Here in Boston, South Lincs, our Aldi is a small place, and was not hopeful of these helmets being in stock. After all, in the flatlands of the Fens, there is not a lot of call for snowboarding gear. However, they had them in, so I bought one. A test ride showed that hopefully, I can modify it to suit my needs.
I liked the shape, and the quick release chin strap. I liked the adjustable internal headband, a sort of one-size-fits-all feature. The lining is held in with velcro, and can be easily be removed for washing.
The big problem, as far as I was concerned was there is too much ventilation. Maybe I am spoiled, as in winter I wear a Russian style fur hat with ear flaps. There is a sort of switch on top of the helmet, which closes some of the vents, but even with those closed, there is still too much air. I ride every day, 365 days a year, on both an ebike and a pedal cycle. As a temporary fix, I removed the liner, and taped over the vents inside the shell with duct tape. I will test it again tomorrow.
Ski goggles are available to suit the helmet, but they are very dark tinted. I will probably use safety DIY type goggles in the rain, to keep my glasses dry. Incidentally, this helmet works well with spectacles. It has a sort of clip at the back to hold a goggles strap. In very low temperatures, I use a motorcyclist`s neck tube, which covers the face up to the nose, and that works well with this helmet. The helmet is very lightweight, but still thick enough to give protection. All in all, excellent value for money, and recommended. I am willing to answer any questions. Just remember that at Aldi, stuff disappears rapidly.

I wonder if you can get a hat to fit over the helmet, such as a oversized russian stlye fir hat? which I have.

Pining for the fiords?
I had a Swedish army hat, very similar to that; wonderful winter headgear. Along with the Swedish army greatcoat, I looked like an escapee from some Cold War film set.

I got one today and I must say they are really comfy. What I have done is to take a peak off one of my old helmets and hot glued it on just to make it look nicer, and to stop the sunlight more. The overall fit is excellent. I cant wait to go on another bike ride now. Bring on the holidays :)

I tried out mine today. An hour each way and nothing to complain about. It was nice and comfortable and kept my ears warm. I'm a cold person in that I have my central heating lower than anybody else and happy to wear only a short-sleeved shirt (no vest) in winter, so I didn't notice any draught through the top even though I'm bald. The slots are small compared with a cycle helmet anyway, so it has to be better. It seems to be everything I had hoped for. I just hope it's not too warm in summer. You can remove the ear covers.

The goggle strap retainer makes a nice mount for a clip-on rear light. I wondered what that piece was for! Thanks Neptune. Kristin, bad luck, but I'm sure they'll come round again soon, and keep an eye on Lidl: They often have similar things a couple of weeks after Aldi.

@Kirstin, sorry you missed out, why not get one of the helmets that Banbury frank recommends? they are very similar in price and style.
@Saneagle. Love the peak idea. I was thinking along similar lines, but was unsure if the hot glue would damage the helmet shell. I wonder if you glued it to the outer shell, or the sort of black shiny lip that bridges the inner and outer shells at the front?
Another idea I am thinking of is to fit a transparent visor that covers the upper half of the face. I would mount it on an elastic strap, so it could be rapidly fitted and removed. I would only use it in rain, or extreme low temperatures. I shall be experimenting using plastic from a large pepsi bottle.

For cold weather electric cycling I had a hankering for something that looked like an old Everoak scooter helmet.

A couple of years ago I bought a leather effect pudding basin type helmet off ebay for about £25.

They're still on ebay, like ECE & DOT approved Black Open Face Leather Half Helmet With visor& Goggles S-XXL | eBay

It's quite light, very comfy and has no draugthy vents. The ear flaps can be unzipped and removed. It's almost road legal in this country for scooters and mopeds, being USA "DOT" approved.

Thanks for the link Rob. I can't choose between the Cambridge Gold, where I might get calls of "where's your horse" or the Tokyo New Jaz, wher it'll be "Where''s your handbag". There's always too much choice these days!

In that respect, we certainly live in a land of plenty.

I've never liked those multi-coloured, multi-slotted helmets - fine for lycra wearing carbon riding road whippets - but they look stupid on a middle-aged bloke like me wobbling along the cycle path on a Brompton.

I'd be happy to wear the one from Aldi, so will look into that or something similar.

I think the Aldi one is much nicer than a regular "bicycle helmet".

... the Cambridge White Denim definitely looks like it should be doing the rounds on the 3:1 at Newmarket

neptune, the hot glue gun worked fine. It sticks straight away. I found that out as the first time I stuck it, it wasn't quite straight and had to remove. The helmet had no marks on it. The second time I put it on it was fine.

I called in to Aldi on Cardiff Bay this morning and was surprised to see one Ski Helmet left . It was an L/XL which I thought might have been too big , as I take a Medium in a Motorcycle Helmet . A quick adjustment with the wheel at the back and it was mine . The matt black colour certainly gives a bad boy image and in future I`ll be ignoring the Lycras , like most of them do to me . I will now be running with the Harley Davidson Riders if they will wait for me and bye bye Lycras . I might have to get two Harley transfers to cover the large Batribike sticker though .
Thanks to Forum Members for suggesting these helmets ,as I would not have thought about them otherwise , not even liking the white stuff !
