Hi powered pedallers!

My name is Mel and hubby is Chris, we live in East Yorkshire and are in our 50s and have 3 dogs: Romy (cross staffie/greyhound), Lily (patterdale terrier) and Tazzy (cross chihuahua/Jack Russell). We have been motorhoming for many a year (ideal with dogs!) and currently have a PVC camper (panel van conversion) and normally take 'normal' bikes on holiday with us. We have had various bikes over the years but found that folding ones prove most suitable for us with the camper for various reasons but mainly as they can be put inside under the rear bed to keep them safe/clean and also keep the 'length' of the vehicle shorter.

After 'teasing' ourselves with electric bikes for a few years but not feeling able to 'justify' the cost or the 'need' we resisted, however as hubby has hip and knee issues which meant we couldn't use bikes at all last year and now riding a normal bike is not so easy for him, we've finally taken the plunge and bought a couple of folding electric ones, Pro-Rider Wayfarers (pedal assist and power only options), which meet our riding/usage requirements, the space available under the bed of our PVC, and are also a bit lighter than most which is a consideration for when we put them on the bike rack.

If possible I'd like your help! The bikes will arrive on Monday so I'm now trying to sort out theft insurance for them - we need a policy that will cover them in the UK, both at home and when on holiday, and also when going abroad (mainland Europe) for up to 45 days at a time, no more than a couple of trips a year. Anyone got any ideas?

Your requirements are quite specialised, so I think you may struggle.

Some companies don't like electric bikes at all, and adding the Euro/motorhome cover will further complicate matters.

Nothing is impossible, but I expect the premium will come to hundreds, which you may feel is not good value for two £500 bikes.

As a first step, have a word with your home insurer.

Mine, and many others, offer basic home and away UK bike cover.

On the plus side, folders are easier to keep with you or inside, and therefore more secure.

Even with insurance and a £60 lock, I don't leave my bike anywhere outside parked for long unattended.

Minx...can you easily remove the batteries from the bikes when you leave them...an electric bike without its battery is useless to a thief, they will usually look elsewhere, but I realise that carrying them around is annoying.

My parents are motorhomers and have electric bikes - they are insured through their home insurance - which they have to pay a bit of a premium for but worth it.

A few years ago their bikes were stolen (without batteries)... The night after the thief returned try find the batteries...and broke into their motorhome and caused 1000's worth of damage, but the insurers wouldn't cover the bikes as they were electric (when it says bike cover on a policy check that extends to electric bikes) but it's worth checking with your insurer as some do cover ebikes.

I will try find out who they are with now.

There's also this insurance: http://www.beba.info/beba-insurance

Thanks all for your help and comments.

I've now tried my home insurance and they don't cover e-bikes, neither does my motorhome insurance, so I've done a quote via BEBA so will contact them to sort it out.
