I understand that under the new laws on Vehicle Exise duty, if you sell a vehicle you have to surrender the road tax.{ Tax discs are a thing of the past]. The new owner has to retax the vehicle. Suppose my car is taxed to the end of December, and I sell it today. I only get a refund on November and December, not the remainder of October. The new owner must tax it immediately, so he must pay for October. But I already payed for October, for which I can not get a refund. So the Government gets TWO LOTS OF TAX for October. Think of the thousands of cars sold each day, and that amounts to a lot of money. I am pleased I no longer have a motor vehicle.

You're right, it was another underhand politician's way of grabbing more money with few noticing. Car tax, or vehicle excise duty, is now a personal tax. You can't pass it on when you sell the car and when you send the v5 in to notify a change of ownership the DVLA should send you the remaining full months left of the tax. Meanwhile, the new owner shouldn't drive it until he or she actually buys the tax. There's going to be tears before bedtime on this one. I did a small calculation, rough and ready but reckon that this manouvre by Osbourne is worth about £60 million extra a year based on 3 miliion vehicles changing hands every year out of the 30 odd million on the roads of this country. This sort of thing really ticks me off because a) they think we're stupid and b) they try to sell things like this as an improvement for us, when it's nothing of the sort.

They will have a long wait a while for mine.
I've had the same car for 11 years and if I decide to replace it, I'll go for one with zero road tax anyhow.
PS there still bar stuards.

I think we will see a rise in the number of cloned cars.

One of the few ways that cloned cars are spotted is when poeple notice the difference between the dodgy number plates and the number on the tax disc.

The zero road tax will only last until every motorist is in tiny little asthmatic car.
After which, the tax will shoot up and you will be robbed blind again.
So not only will you be paying road tax once again you will also be paying for a catalytic convertor and possibly a diesel particle too.

I seem to remember a time when diesel was cheaper than petrol. A good many people swapped to diesel cars to save money on fuel. Look at it now.

The road tax scam, sorry scheme is just another way to rob us of even more.
Bar Stuards indeed.

This will distort the market. Watch out for a flood of sales on the last /first day of the month. Seller cancels tax on 30th ,buyer taxes on 1st. Paperwork exercise to achieve this should be simple. Cloning will increase, crook finds identical car, gets plates off ebay, keeps ANPR happy, calculated risk of being stopped by trafpol if driving otherwise OK.

This isn't really a big deal though is it? For the non-wealthy their cars have about £140 per annum average VED, so less than £12 a month. The average distribution of sales dates therefore means an average loss of £6, and less for the poorest with the lower end cars. That's a tiny amount, and adding that it's an option to only sell close to the end of a month makes this not really an issue.

After all, buying the new car at the start of the month then gets the maximum benefit from the new tax month as Kuorider has noted, so an end of month transaction makes double sense.

Insurance runs from any day of the year so why should VED not do the same.
Pack it in 10 days early, get 10 days money back. Seems as if it would then be simpler and also fairer system.
