looking at re cell for my Trek bike and I found this site, just wondered if anyone has bought from them. Prices are low but they have been there for a while, which is positive.

Did a bit of googling and it seems they have been around for a while, and have some positive comments. I would like to build the best battery possible but I understand that it's recommended to use the Sony US18650V3s in the Trek battery.

Well in reality like most of the world's battery users I would like the highest capacity, mobile phones, laptops, eco cars, are all looking for the magic technology to make their own application more useable. Batteries like the Sanyo ones you quote seem to have a much higher capacity that the Sony originals in my battery which I believe e are 1600 mah, but would they be safe in my application?
Originally I could get to 25 MLS from a charge but it would be nice to get 35 or more, the battery is already quite light and I am happy with the bike which not only works well but looks pretty good. Now I am down to 10 to 15 miles from a charge and a replacement battery is getting on for the cost of some ebikes, so I am looking at a re cell, and hoping to harness some of the improvements made since mine was designed.

You could nearly double you range or go a bit more then double with a recell, Jimmy at Insat /bga reworking uses top cells.
Samsung 30Q's 3000mah 10/15a discharge.
Panasonic/Sanyo same company basically GA's 3450 mah, great capacity and 10amp discharge.
Sony VCT6's min 3000mah average 3120mah good discharge rated for 30amp but 19/20amp see's it peak before getting really hot.

The new Sanyo 20700B appears to be good having a 4000mah rating, at 10a continuous it puts out over 3900mah. One site rates it as 16a continuous discharge with out boiling.
LG MJ1 3500mah 10a rating but can give 15a but gets hot.

Seems to be a quantum leap in batteries, but does it need any special balance cuircit or could I just put them in my old battery pack? Would my old charger be happy charging them? I am not up to date on this kind of technology which seems to be moving on a pace.
The link I posted above shows my battery being re built but he mentions to stick with the Sony cells.
Quite honestly doubling the original range would be fantastic and make my bike really good, especially in an extremely hilly area like North Yorkshir.

I missed another good cell out , the 5300mah 13a discharge Boston Swing cell. This basically a double 18/19650 which they rate as a 10yr battery. Cell size is 64.8mm/ h x 37.2mm/ w x 74.3mm/ d, 100% DOD from 1k cycles, 90% DOD from 2k cycles and 80% DOD from 3k cycles. Boston say that after 10 years usage and 2k cycles the Swing's capacity is 4400mah. 2c charge rate so 10.6a can reach 80% SOC in 30 mins.

Mah has improved along with some pretty good amp rates, some batteries do vary some will charge at 4-6a, most are still 3.6v nom and 4.2v max charge and a standard 2a charger is all that is needed. There are a few appearing with 4.35v max charge but means a higher voltage charger.
For those wanting amps then look at Sony 2600mah VTC5A's a proper 30a discharge.
Your current bms will be adequate though if you were to up the controllers ampage then a new bms may be needed. Running higher amp batteries isn't a problem as they will run cooler if max aps aren't drawn and will expand their life cycle.
