How about a new thread to say what little things have made us feel happy today ?

Come on...just for fun....take our minds off any doom and gloom around :D

For me, its looking at my four little Poms spread out fast asleep on their favourite sheepskin rugs and cushions, on their backs, with their little paws up in the air, smiles on their faces and not a care in the world......

(cos I make it a rule to never discuss politics, bankers or the recession with them lol )

.......never fails to lift my spirits :D

What has made YOU happy today ?......it could make us ALL smile for a while.......:)

Nothing today. Quite a few good memories of previous happy incidents, 50/50 human and wildlife related.

Here's a happy wildlife story then, one concerning woodmice which are cute creatures with young that are impossibly cute. Unlike housemice, they have large ears and hop kangaroo fashion. I get them in my home occasionally, after the birdseed, but am usually able to locate one that gets in and expel it.

However, on one occasion there was one chewing into my seed bags which I was unable to find, so to avoid the inconvenience of the damaged bags I started leaving out small amounts of sunflower seed. It soon became apparent that the amount of seed eaten was feeding more than one mouth, so I had a thorough search to locate a nest, but again drew a blank, so I bought a humane trapdoor trap making sure that held the only accessible seed. Sure enough, one morning there was a trapped woodmouse which I took into the woods to a safe spot where I released it with a small starter stock of seed.

The next day I was working on a bike in my bedroom cum workroom when a baby woodmouse came hopping out from under the bed, hopped right up to me and stared up at my face. This was weird, they are normally instinctively frightened of humans. Satisfied, it calmly hopped on through the flat to where I'd reset the trap and sure enough, click, it was caught. So I popped it into a lidded bowl with some sunflower seed and carried on working. Shortly after, yet another baby woodmouse appeared from under the bed, hopped up to study me, then hopped off to get the seed and got trapped. Finally a third and final one repeated the whole performance so there were three in the bowl now, all of which I took up to where the mother was released and left them with plenty of seed for a few days.

Following that I pulled out the bed and thoroughly searched the area, skirting boards, carpet edges etc but could find no nest. Some while after I renewed the bedroom carpet, and to shift the divan bed tipped it on it's side when I saw a small hole in the base underside fabric at the head end. What the mother had done was hopped up and gnawed her way in, building a tiny nest inside the base with the stuffing material.

Of course that explained why the young were so tame with me, they'd grown up active at night just under my pillow area so were completely acclimatised to my smell. Click photo to enlarge:

Wow clearly I have been missing out on a whole other side to you guys/gal.

Having suffered from deep depression quite a few years ago (just to keep it cheery), I have learnt that happiness is often over rated. It comes and goes. I much prefer the idea of continual contentment. By that I mean acceptance and remaining in calm state whether experiencing feelings of either happiness or sadness.

What a load of waffel, but then again its been working for me since I kicked depression into touch :)

Regards

Jerry

Puncture 3 or 4 miles into commute this morning. Fit the new tube I carry. Lasts a mile. Repair hole, lasts 1/2 mile. Decide something is profoundly amiss and start working out quickest route to the station. I'm 12 miles from the office, on opposite side of city centre, it's 8.00.

Car pulls over, it's a colleauge I hardly know, 'can I help?'. We strip bike, fit it into his Panda, bike dropped off at his home. He'll take it and me home tonight.

Visit LBS over lunch, they have correct wheel, tube and rim tape and a 700 x 38 Schwalbe M+ (which are shown as out of stock at all the on-line retailers) for £75.

Yes, happy.

Not waffle Jerry, I think contentment is probably a better choice of word and target to aim for, happy somehow implying a slight "high".

Well, I have just come in from a ride. Didn't go anywhere particular, spent some time trickling along a country lane that I have known since a boy (a LONG time ago).
Saw things I have never noticed in all the times I have howled along it on motor cycles, sped along it in cars and campervans, but at 8-10mph with the throttle just open it was a new world. Because it is hilly, I never saw these things when struggling long on an ordinary bike.
Birds, a rabbit, tiny wild trout in the small stream.Plants and flowers I cannot hope to name.
I rode into a holiday caravan site, past the barrier arm, no one questions an old guy on what appears to be a bike. These are semi residential caravans, so I admired the little gardens that the owners have constructed, saw holiday makers having lunch on their wooden decking, avoided a crowd of 5 year olds on their bikes with stabilisers.(Obviously future coffee bar cowboys)
Got barked at by a dog, mooed by a cow, got worried by a herd of wild horses who were on the road, but they let me through without problem. Got onto the common and the main road. Saw a mad woman waiting at a bus stop in the middle of nowhere, she was dancing wildly (Honestly, I am not making this up), so I rushed past her. I reached the airfield which rejoices in the name of Swansea Airport and saw some sky divers. Then I rode home with a tail wind and made good time.
Yes, I enjoyed it.
